I saw in the news today that the Sir Anthony Hotel on Playa De Las Americas is about to re-open, you can book for September and a basic room will set you back just under 400 Eur a night.

It reminds me of the Lopesan Melonares that's on the beach, its a 5 star hotel is aimed at a smaller set of exclusive clientele.

Madness. I always view the Canaries as cheap and cheerful and largely full of cheap and cheerful holidaymakers. So 400 Euros easily buys me an apartment for a week - without neighbours - without fighting for sunloungers.

I'm sure these 5 star places are magnificent, as long as you stay in them.

Maybe 20 years ago, the amount of 5 star hotels here now is legion. There is a bum for every seat.

I like apartments as much as anyone else but its hard work.

This new hotel is approx. located, priced against the Victoria and the Nivaria, both are exceptionally good hotels and I look forward to giving this new one a test drive once the initial rush has died down.

Why would anyone in their right mind who could afford a min of 400 Euros a night go to PdlA?

That baffles me.

I'm considering a family trip at some point, so thanks to all the contributors.

After a short foray into all inclusive, it's not us, so we'd be going back to flights, car hire and self catering with a pool ideally. We're not massive beach/lying around people, so it looks to me like GC/Tenerife would suit us best, with a bit more to see and do?

What websites do people use to book properties?

Thanks

Currently at the Iberostar selection lanzarote park and I rate this as the best all inclusive hotel we have visited in Europe.

They have a section called star prestige which is adults only, a nice tiuch for those not wanting the kids running riot in the pools.

Top shelf alcohol included as standard too.
I’m there this Saturday for a week
Went at new years this year also
Really good
Surprisingly good value also for 5star

Plenty to see and do on Fuerteventura with a hire car. Dunes, beaches, mountains, volcanoes. GC has a lovely interior but much is similar to the last bit and roads twist and turn interminably. Tenerife has a lovely national park too but it's a bit of a drive up. FV has far more to see, for my money. Lanza is also a bit samey.

I use VRBO and Holiday Lettings and AirBnB if pushed but lately I have been using Booking dot com because if you sign up to their Genius programme, you get decent discounts and they seem to have higher standards of cleanliness than some of the private renters.

Lanzarote (Playa blanca) has a good selection of villas, in FV we struggled to find decent areas, I ended up in Caleta de fuste.

FV needed more driving to west/south locations with Lanzarote drivable top to bottom in an hour or so.

True but staying in Caleta is a halfway point and about an hour north (Corralejo) or south (Morro Jable or Jandia). Betancuria, Pajara and Ajuy are more the middle. Easy to plan a direction to go. FV is in the process of finishing off a central motorway for more rapid transit which is good for time, bad for scenic travel.

I’ve been to Tenerife loads of times over the past 30 years and I’ve always wanted to go on the cable car up Teide.

When we went as kids my Dad would never take us as he had a thing about heights. Didn’t really seem appropriate during lads holidays in my late teens/early 20’s.

After a 10 year gap I went again with my OH in 2018 and we said when we booked we must go on it, she agreed. By the time we went she was pregnant and you’re not allowed on and I didn’t fancy leaving her at the base waiting whilst me and my daughter went on.

We went again with the 2 kids earlier this month. I only booked a car for a few days at the end of the holiday, so booked us all tickets on cable car a couple of days before we were due to leave. Looked at my phone just as we were about to set off - closed due to bad weather - the only closed day during the 2 weeks we were there! I was gutted. It offered the option to rebook but there were no spaces on the remaining days of our holiday.

We still drove up and had a look around the base station again. There didn’t seem too much wrong with the weather, it was very slightly blustery wind.

I will need to schedule a return to Tenerife again at some point.

Currently learning Spanish and I'm going to immerse myself in the language, and escape the cold by spending over a month in Tenerife, Dec to Jan.

Renting a cheap but big apartment away from the tourist areas so that any family and/or friends can stay. Got a cheap car from Cicar for the month too.

Plan to do a bit of hiking so any routes up Tiede that anyone has done?

Other suggestions of things to do will be greatly received as I must make sure I have an itinerary or I'll just end up sitting around the apartment like I do at home hehe

Enrolling in a Spanish class whilst there is probably a good idea.

I'll say it again for Tenerife car hirers - watch out for thieves and don't leave stuff in your car. Use the key, not the remote, if possible.

They seem to have capture devices so you return to a still locked car and find out later they've nicked stuff from your boot.

Once was bad luck, twice was annoying.

I have not done it myself but be forewarned that the closure of the cable car and all roads up Tiede and sometimes even the surrounding roads can be closed at random intervals during Jan and Feb due to snow and ice.

Jan is worse than Feb but high winds are more of a problem in Feb (purely from memory).

In February 2016, the entire national park was closed and was 10 foot under snow. Teide is, of course, a very high mountain and I would say January and February are usually the month it's likely to be colder. Still sunny at sea level though.

Visiting Fuerteventura, I have found that while the weather is clement, it can suffer from cold winds in February though 2022 was warm, 2023 was sunny but chilly. November and December 2022 were pretty hot though.

My dad was too tight.

Made us walk up from the car park. We were about 5, 7 and 9 at the time. Shredded our shoes because the volcanic rocks are so sharp. Took all day too in the baking heat.

Think yourself lucky.

It sounds like you have a memorable story from your childhood adventure on Mount Teide! Walking up from the car park with your siblings in the baking heat and dealing with the sharp volcanic rocks definitely sounds like quite the experience. It's amazing how such experiences can shape our memories and perspectives on travel.

It seemed that getting Ajuy and Morro Jable was the pain in the ars.

Sotavento beach was gorgeous though, well recommend that.
