I wish car hire wasn't so expensive but needs must... Around £400 with the young driver surcharge cry
I'm assuming you're flying into LAX... what dates are you hiring the car from/to?
29th May till 11th June smile
I'm guessing that with a £400 total charge you haven't opted for the CDW and SLI protection?
if so, I would strongly advise that you re-think that decision.

If you have a bump, the hire company will charge you for every day the car's off the road and if it's stolen they will charge you the replacement cost.... American renters have this liability covered on their credit cards hence it's not automatically included in the rental fee.

With those insurances and the under-age charge, using discount codes found on the net,
Budget are coming out at $1250 for an intermediate
Hertz are displaying $1250 for a convertible Mustang / Sebring
Advantage will cost you $1050 for the soft top

If you're not bothered with the insurance then Advantage is $900 with the young driver surcharge etc which isn't bad.

That's a really good rate in that case, the under 25 element alone is normally $15 a day at least - I've just spent a couple of hours running quotes with all the discount codes I can find and the very best I can get is $1105 for an intermediate.

Mind if I ask where you're getting that rate from?

Hertz, it's about £430 with the young driver charge, seems to be similar in most places like carhire3000 etc (by the time I add on the $15-$25/day they don't include)

We've pre-paid for a "Toyota Rav4 or similar" via the Hertz UK website, including CDW for £480 for 2 weeks and 2 days (no car required in San Francisco)

I'm 29 though.

Pricy that.

A 'mid-size' 4x4 through www.usacargire.co.uk is £400 for 16 days.

Thought I'd bump this seeing as we're going on Saturday biggrin

Any more info anyone wants to share? What to see, etc? Our route consists pretty much of LA > San Bernardino > Mojave > Las Gegas > Death Valley > Yosemite > San Fran > Monterey > Down the coast back to LAX cool

Have fun, I'm seriously jealous... I've not been back to the US since the mammoth California trip I travel blogged about before, but I'm getting seriously itchy feet.

Hope that it all works for you, don't forget Hearst Castle at San Simeon - worth the flight from the UK just for that place!

One option might be to hire an RV.

It gives you tons of freedom, and it's like driving around with your own beer and steak fridge attached.

Just buy a cheap BBQ, and you're set.

The roads are wide and relaxing to drive on.

Freaky, I'm doing the same route, but flying out on Sunday instead.

Well I'm heading back in August. Just thought I'd let everyone know that since this thread came up again. A day short of 5 weeks. And I'll have a convertible for the entire time. biggrin Booked direct with Hertz as I couldn't find anyone cheaper. 126884 code waives the underage surcharge. Although I was surprise to find out that they have a limit on that and that it isn't a per day surcharge. Since the charge is raised at the actual rental facility though I didn't want to take any chances. Especially as I'm only 24 and wouldn't like to be stung for an extra $25 a day!

So you're saying that code waives the right for them to charge you when you arrive? As that's when you pay the underage surcharge, not when you book..

Yep. You enter it when you book online, and then its noted against your reservation for when you collect the car. I booked mine now just in case it expires soon, even thought I'm not going until the end of August.

Well, we got back yesterday from 3 weeks of great fun, 2000 miles and a surprisingly good Ford Escape SUV.

Loads of places we want to go back to, I'll write a bit more in a few days.

I picked up a Suburban last night and so far have been through Beverly Hills, done a few laps of the Mulholland, Laurell Canyon, Sunset Blvd, Coldwater canyon loop (I've got far from the best vehicle for it, but it was fun none the less biggrin), over to the giant tourist trap that is the Chinese Theatre on Holywood Blvd, through Downtown past Union Station and now I'm currently sat in a hotel in Long Beach, not sure of the mileage I've done today, I've kept forgetting to reset the trip meter, but I've been quite impressed with the Suburban, it rolls a bit on the suspension on corners and there's no getting away from the fact that it's a big ole beast, but it handles quite well, especially considering it's 2.5 tonnes of truck and has a fair bit of go and an ever so slightly addictive v8 growl when you open it up although nothing like the 50s vintage pickup that drove past me earlier with open pipes making a sound like God shouting and popping and banging everytime he lifted off smile

Anyone know what this is?

Big S - Dont worry too much about the mileage. When you hand back the hire car they'll gice you a printout with the start/finish mileage on it.

Cool, thanks, I worked my route out to about 1400 miles just going from place to place, so it'll be nice to see how much extra I clock up running around the place smile
