yeah. Propose to your girlfriend at the top of the Grand Platieres lift on a nice sunny day. I did and it was definitely one of the best days of my life.

Can't remember much about the skiing to be honest, so it was neither stand out good or bad - but from what I do remember it had a decent range of pistes. Enjoy yourself.
Well as I'm not a lesbian........ Best hope Mr E reads this thread biggrin

Middle of the road is fine for me as i'm an improver, hope it's okay for the others then. Mind you it is linked to several others I'm sure we'll be fine. Thanks for the feedback!

Hmm, probably should have looked at your username for gender classification right?
It's a nice resort, we stayed at the mont soleil hotel which had it's own lift built for ski in-ski out purposes and was excellent. I ski pretty well and don't recall too much difficult terrain, and the Father in law and his daughter (the aforementioned girlfriend) were both relatively new to skiing (been twice) and also enjoyed it. I think you'll have a good time.

Do the night time snow shoe walking if you get a chance, it's almost as much fun as a bit of skiing running down steep, snow filled fields.

I'm waiting for this season to start...

5th December Chamonix is open - 45mins quick pace drive from Geneva
7th December Flaine - 45mins quick drive from Geneva

Then spending every weekend in a different location... which to choose from:
Flaine, Chamonix, Les Deux Alpes, Le Grand Bornand, La Clusaz, Megeve (although I hate it, it's overpriced and full of tossers)

Weekends for the winter are sorted where I live :-)

Well, after my bloody nightmare apartment being cancelled at very short notice, I think I've finally managed to find another one....

Just waiting for confirmation about the total, then I'll be having a little cheer to myself.

I did exactly the right thing, and found an apartment for the season back in April/May, all booked, deposit paid, job done.

Chap contacted me very late September to tell me unfortunately it was no longer available, which meant me looking for an apartment, for the season, in October, which is far too late for Kitzbuhel, which is booked up for months in advance.

I'll be starting another thread about our toboggan adventures, but suffice to say, my old office has been temporarily turned in to an aluminium workshop!

So, skis/boots are coming out of the loft next weekend, along with roof bars, clothes, and all the other kit, to get ready for the season. It's all fun!

Just booked flights to Japan for (hopefully) some deeeep powder in February. I've got 3 weeks in Myoko Kogen - the missus is flying home after two tongue out
They get similar amounts of snow as Niseko (average 13 meters a year) but no where near the amount of whiteys, so it should be a great adventure.

So. Very. Excited!

Pass Thurn opened yesterday. Snow at the top of the Hahnenkahm already, looks like a good start to the season.

So, anybody heading Kitzbuehel way this winter?

Off to Val D in the second week of Jan and then back for a second week in the first week of Feb.
MIght try and squeeze a sneaky couple of days in before Christmas if the snow is looking good.

RE recommendations for Val
- happy hour is your friend; all the bars have happy hours at different times so plan your route accordingly....otherwise your wallet is going to take a real bashing.
- lovely restaurant over by Le Fornet - Edelweiss. Only accessible by ski/board and does some lovely food at reasonable prices (much better than going to the cattlemarket that is the Folie Douce over at the top of La Daille.
Don't plan to do any serious ski-ing afterwards though - you'll be far too full.
- bar at the bottom of La Daille.....we always call it Rosie's after the original owner.....I think that it is called something like La Rosee Perdu....lovely roaring fire inside for when it is cold and nice terrace for when it is sunny.
Perfect to wait for people coming down La Daille as they will have to come past the bar in order to get to the bus stop.
- Cafe Face is normal a safe bet for a couple of drinks; not too expensive outside of happy hour and generally has a good atmosphere

Check out www.valdinet.com - mine of useful information and has regular snow reports so that you can get yourself in the mood closer to the time......or drive yourself crazy that you can't get out there straightway

Pack lot of layers - because of the huge area of Espace Killy you can go from one extreme to the other in a short space of time.
And in January it can get really, really cold.
So rucksack a couple of extra layers can be a life-saver.

If I'm honest, I've never really gone out in Le Fornet in the evening so I'm not really sure what there is to do out there. But as has been said, there's a free bus which runs into town.
But it doesn't run all night and it's a bit of trek back.

And personally I wouldn't buy boots from Snow and Rock or any place in the UK.
I've never had a boot which worked straight out of the box; boots which appear to fit in the shop can quickly become a real pain once you get into a proper ski-ing situation and spend a couple of hours in them.
Nothing worse than to have to suffer the whole holiday or having to pay someone out there to do remedial work
(plus if you wait to get back to the UK, there's no guarantee that the problem will have been solved and you have to wait until your next holiday)
Place on the high street called Surefeet which did wonders with my wife's boots
Not cheap but not mega expensive either (and it stopped the wife from complaining)

I think that a lot of people end up suffering in ski-boots because they don't know any better --> ski boots don't have to hurt you.
Just my 2pence though.

I'm going to Guzet in the French Pyrenees, only a small station but it's 20 minutes from my door so I don't care.Being that close it doesn't matter if I only go for a couple of hours, last season I only had about 14 days off the slopes

Change of plan for me

Was supposed to be Japan (half way between me & my business partner who is currently working out in Australia)

But managed to persuade him to meet me in Whistler instead!!!!! Can't wait, heard so much about Whistler but never been and appeals to me much more than Japan

Booked & paid for yesterday on a non changeable / non refudnable flight, so that's it.

Staying at the Westin Hotel which is apparently right by the lifts - oh yes. Just need to improve my boarding now...ummmm.

It won't disappoint you! The Westin's a decent hotel and the location is arguably the best in the village for the lifts. That said there is nowhere in the main village that is particularly far away (the advantages of being purpose built and pedestrianised!) Ski/board school is excellent and great fun as well.

I'll be there for 12 days from Boxing day. We have a one bed apartment in the Sunpath complex so we go skiing at least once a year. Last year I had the pleasure of meeting up with Streetrod from PH and we had an awesome morning blasting around on Blackcomb Mountain.

When are you there?

Thanks to those who offered me boot advice. I got some recently some fitted at Solutions 4 Feet in Bicester and tried them in Hemel. What a difference! I can't wait to try them on the mountains now.

Also thanks to those who have offered Val D'Isere advice. I've made notes. hehe

You should. The ladies downhill course, from the tunnel, is quite possibly one of the most fantastic runs you can do. It's usually well groomed, it's wide, fast, with all sorts of camber changes, dips and ridges, and yet you'll never feel terrified by the terrain - it's set up to make you go "wheeee!". Much easier to ski it very fast than it is to ski the mens' downhill course fast. That takes (a) balls (b) good conditions (c) good grooming (d) not many other people around (e) quads of steel.

Also looking to go to Soelden for the end of season weekend. It's a mental place for Apres Ski.
