The bridge, as explained to me by a knowledgeable local I worked with, was part of a highways project for which funds dried up. It's been there about 15 years or so, I think.

What I couldn't work out, or get an answer to, was where the road was supposed to go after the bridge. Straight up the ridge? Through a tunnel? All seems very odd.

Mind you, having experienced some of the way things get done over there (or don't) it wouldn't surprise me much if it was built in the wrong place entirely.

I also first thought about Eastern Europe, Balkans perhaps. But then again, I've seen roads not unlike that in the Canaries once you get off the beaten track.
