Depends what you mean by open I guess. The slopes might be open but certainly questionable if the bars and clubs will be open all season, as they were one of the main ways it spread early on.

French resorts are open now, just have to wear a mask in ques and on lifts.

I think apres ski is fked but id imagine bars and restaurants are open for social drinks.
You don't have to wear masks in the queues or on chairlifts. Only in the télécabines / téléphériques.

Does anyone think the possibility that the Hogg will restrict Ski resorts based on the massive infections brought back in Q1 20?

If U.K. infections and hospitalisations escalate to anything like the latest Oxford Uni modelling surely close of borders would be high on the list

weepingweepingweeping vivrelasaison!

Seriously though, now a lot of people have proven that they can "work from home" and be just as effective they're now thinking that Home doesn't have to be wet cold UK but can be up a Mountain close to the slopes!!

Doesn't matter if the borders close or there's a returners quarantine! bounce

I’m certainly planning to work from the mountains for the season.

Hopefully any transit quarantines will help keep the resort open.

I expect it to be a little quieter, face covering is relatively easy, chair lifts likely ok, but maybe gondolas less so - and apres may well be severely curtailed.

This certainly happened here in St. Moritz. I remember having lunch with a couple of Milanese on the day the first cases were reported in Northern Italy and they had already decided that they were staying until it cleared up.

The holiday homes were mostly occupied right through the closed season which is unheard of. The local bookshop spent lockdown printing hundreds of pages of Italian children’s homework a day. The local electricity company said there were about 2000 people more here than they’d usually expect at that time of year which must be about 50% more.

As an indicator for those thinking of skiing next winter, this summer has been busier than normal. I was with the head of tourism from a neighboring village a fortnight ago and she said all their accommodation was fully booked which is usually only the case in the busiest weeks in the ski season.

That’s good news - but does it mean there is no availability then for anyone to book accomodation for the ski season due to long terms Staying put.

No, the folks staying up here will be those with either a private apartment or house. The biggest set of owners here are Italians and few owners rent out their places when they're not using them so they sit empty much of the year. Most visitors to St. Moritz stay in hotels.

Our season runs from early December until March with higher areas off the main ski areas open from October to May. The busiest weeks are Christmas / New Year and the school holidays.

I believe that the telecoms infrastructure was updated for the World Cup a few years ago so we get very fast internet. 5G is also available throughout the town. Hence there are a decent number of us who work from here at least part of the year. I believe Lord Foster spent much of the lock-down in his apartment in town.

I think it’s a massive risk, there was definite links to Covid infections to ski resorts this year, whether it is for any other reason that transport / number of people, going, corwdingetc I am unsure , but it’s interesting that there’s been outbreaks at food and meat processors with cold stores and an ‘Iceland’ DC had cases linked to it last week or so....apparently the virus can live for up to a month in frozen conditions, so maybe there is a specific risk on ski trips?
We’re going to have a few years off til there’s more information. 6 days on the slopes, followed by potential illnesss, time off, or 14 days quarantine and loss of work or annual leave, just doesn’t seem worth it at the mo!

I've just received a notification that the place I've been going to for years is holding an open sale at the hotel this weekend of everything on site - and I mean everything, not just ski kit but TVs, kitchen equipment, the pool table, snow tyres for the minibuses, even the hot tub. Game over for them frown

I think there's a few more about to chuck in the Towel after the quarantine rules change at 04:00 tomorrow.

Trip #1, to Tignes in early December planned, will just be a while before bookings open.
Trip #2, off piste in the Portes du Soleil in late Jan. booked yesterday.
Now to catch up on all the chat around planning trip #3, to Austria in March...

The on going covid risk has made me push thoughts of a NZ trip next (our) summer though. A long, expensive flight to arrive and find rules have changed and you need to quaranteen for 14 days!

Easyjet have just deleted their Newcastle to Geneva route entirely.

EG winter season 20/21 and every other time of the year.

These NCL-GVA flights were 6 days a week and quite busy before CV19

Easyjet website said:
Sorry, we don't fly directly from Newcastle to Geneva
Available with a connection (Worldwide by easyjet)
Newcastle to Geneva (with 1 stop) Worldwide

Alternative easyjet routes
Edinburgh to Geneva
the global proliferation of flights from anywhere to anywhere is over for a while.

I'm knocking 2021 on the head ski-wise; this covid thing isn't going to be over, nothing like. I'm not blowing hundreds and hundreds of pounds, sorting the annual leave etc just to spend ages wondering if I'm going to win the cancelled holiday lottery. I WFH so this quarantine nonsense doesn't matter, but the rest of it is a farce now.

Interesting move from a ski school in the Grand Massif we've used before. We're booked for February half term and whilst my girls have completed their ski levels they want to learn boarding and the other family we're going with also need lessons. Normally they don't release anything for booking until the end of September but I got an email last week giving me a heads up that they were launching early this year. Places for that week went very quickly so anyone not already in their system when they try booking from now will have a shock. Most curious aspect was that they don't want any payment until October.

I suspect quite a few will be doing the same. Going to be a strange season I think.
