Day Trip near Los Angeles?

Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park, never been myself, but planning to go in November. Looking forward to the Aerial Tramway and the spectacular views.
San Diego worth it for the USS Midway alone, plus many good bars/restaurants. Tijuana seems to be a place to avoid, been advised that by most people.

I would also head towards Laguna Beach (and beyond) down the PCH there are lots of places to stop off.
If you are awake early there is usually a car show of some description on Saturdays and Sundays first thing in the morning. They are usually very relaxed and an amazing mix of cars. Derelicts and Donuts in Huntingdon Beach is good for Hot Rods and classics, there is also a show in Irvine (cars and coffee I think) that also has a good mix of old and new.
This is a good site for finding out about car shows in the area:
