Top of the Rock is better than Empire State Building.
Yup, I'd agree with that. And it has the added bonus that you can see the Empire State Building from the top of itDSC_3553 by furtive, on Flickr
I wouldn't bother with the Guggenheim if you only have one day, there are other art galleries out there in the world.
Top of the Rock
Times Square
Ground Zero
Grand Central Station
If you have time a wander through Central Park is worthwhile. As mentioned in previous posts, the ferry is decent (and free).

IIRC There are four different open top bus tours around New York, we chose two of them, and saw FAR more than if we had been walking round aimlessly.
Covered Brooklyn, Harlem, plus most of the usual places, Chrysler Building, Flat Iron Building, Statueof Liberty, Central Park, Times Square, Woolworth building etc.....
If you are there a few days a trip to Coney Island is definitely worthwhile (imo).

Unless you fancy spending hours waiting, get the express pass for the empire state (with the 102nd floor add on).
You will be up, have walked around both floors and back down at street level before the rest of the people in line who entered the building at the same time as you have even got through security- as you can skip ALL lines and go right to the front, including security and elevators.
We went on valentines day morning and the line was tiny. My girlfriend had been before and didnt queue long. Don't buy any tickets on the street. You will be up, have walked around both floors and back down at street level before the rest of the people in line who entered the building at the same time as you have even got through security- as you can skip ALL lines and go right to the front, including security and elevators.

It's a great building (and to be fair, the content was very decent). Iirc the ticket price came with an audiotour. One of the better art galleries I've been to in the world. If in NYC for such a limited time, you want to do things which you can only do in NYC.
As mentioned:
Grand Central Station
Don't forget the food hall on the floor below
Times Square
Ferry trip
Gf @ Central Park
Cliché selective colour taxi shot
Oh and eat lots!!
The Ground Zero Memorial Museum is very good (and very moving).
Reminds me, I should probably do a write up of my NYC trip at some point (added to mental list).
