I also wouldn't pay to hire a GPS. The island has such few roads you would have to be a moron to get lost.
Point of order sir. You may not think you will need it but you would be mad not to have at least one on the phone to use...Going offroad is a different story though I accept.
Nelly - why would you have seperate gravel insurance and not the one offered by the renters? I would say a seperate provider is asking for trouble as they will just palm the problem off on each other. If its the renters extra insurance then as far as I would be concerned its just the renters problem as you have paid the suppliment for it not to be your problem.
When we took the car back to Keflavic they didnt even really check it over anyway...
Having been out there when the weather has become 'interesting' I would like one with me just to be able to give others an exact lock on my location should I need the cavalry. So many people think that it's a wee bit cold but all nice and fluffy otherwise. Er, NEWSFLASH you are actually in one of the most inhospitable parts of the World and the weather can go from "Almost feels like the med" jeans and tee shirts to sub one minute exposure and you have frostbite in minutes.
there is a large white patch on my nose that will illustrate this if you would like...

Been twice, absolutely loved it, will have to go back again though as we still haven't seen the aurora, annoyingly it was apparently really clear the first night we were there last time, but we were still in Reykjavik at the time, by the time, the rest of the week where we were out of town it was too cloudy
Definitely do a 4x4/superjeep tour, they'll take you to places you'd have no chance of reaching otherwise. ALst time we spend a couple of days near Reykjavik to do the Golden Circle, dog sledding, and Blue Lagoon, then workd our way along the south coast as far as Jökulsárlón for the rest of the week, and pretty much recommend the whole route.
I disagree with a previous posters comment about not bothering with Minke and trying Puffin, I'm the other way around, Minke is fantastic. There's a Tapas place in Reykjavik that is quite good if you want to try a fair few local dishes, or have the tasking menu at Sjávargrillið, we had about 15 species in one meal.

We were advised to take out separate windscreen cover as apparently a lot of car hire places have a large excess. I shall read up a bit more on it (haven't taken it out yet), thanks for the heads up though. When we took the car back to Keflavic they didnt even really check it over anyway...

Ahh, Jökulsárlón! It was really bizarre being on a beach with huge lumps of ice on it Yes they are, but you don't really need it as absolutely everywhere takes cards and a lot of credit cards don't charge commission on overseas payments. They even have drink/snack vending machines that take cards.
If you do pay commission then take a look at Caxton cards, you pre load them with credit and then can use them as a debit card or at cashpoints.
We were there for a week and the only cash we used was when a takeaway pizza place realised they were missing an ingredient and gave us a cash refund on our credit card paid order.
Oh and before anyone has a go about me buying takeaway pizza when on holiday it so we could spend the evening in the outdoor hot tub keeping an eye out for the aurora
