My grans going on a cruise next may which includes a stop off in India. She's booked with Planet cruises who told her it would cost £90 per person per visit. Says in her booking confirmation.

Can you get a visa free. I ask as she had something similar a few years ago about a visa for another country and found out it could be obtained for free, and the other company was trying it on

Any help or guidance greatly received

You definitely pay for Indian visas, and they have to be applied for ahead of time. They're nowhere near £90 though.

Its not £90 its like £40 (on a tourist visa), its just a long and tedious process...

You have to fill out the online application form http://in.vfsglobal.co.uk/touristvisa.html follow the guide down the right hand column...It is a lot more complext han it needs to be, but all the check are necessary i guess. Oh and they have to have photos, but not normal photos they are 2" x 2"...a ball ache but it raises the costs by a little

I had to collect the visa from Victoria, when you go and collect...you MUST take all the paperwork you have with you...saves on all sorts of delays.

If it's any help, this morning I submitted my application for a 6 month tourist visa with multiple entry and it cost £42.50. I have to drop off and pick up my docs from Victoria too. (well I didn't have to, but I chose to)

Bear in mind that with an Indian visa, the clock starts ticking as soon as it's issued (not when your travels begin). For most this is fine, but if you're heading off round some other coutries first, you mind find it close to expiry by the time you get to India! Common mistake!

The Indian high commission are a bunch of idiots . They will not answer the phone and are rude and unhelpful.
They lost my mothers old passport and other documents and denied ever having them . It took a year to update her passport. wkers and time wasters

I call it a fish market! VFS is the agent for a lot of visas for different countries...Make sure that the Indian forms are completed properly. They tend to be a bit power hungry across the board at the indian embassy and even a small error will get you a lot of attitude.... which really can be solved indian style...with a tight slap! But since you are a tourist...dont take my advice on the solution...just avoid the errors.

Oh yes I forgot to mention the guy that walks amongst people who are waiting and offers a quicker service for cash. He does wander around behind the counter. This is in Birmingham .

We use CIBT for all our Visa stuff. Fairly quick and efficient. Their website shows the Visa fee is £40.50 plus their processing fee. Sounds like you can do it yourself a lot cheaper than the agent is asking for but if you want a no hassle service then pay somebody to do it for you.

Yeah, sorry, I should have put a link. Basically you download the pack. Fill in all the details and send everything back to them and they sort it all out. Obviously they charge a fee but it's generally been low hassle. I've used them for Visa's, passports, second passports, third passports, etc...

Next question, she is going in May. if the visa kicks in as soon as it is issued, how long dot they last and when is it ideal to get this sorted. she's only going for a 2 week cruise

I'm going to India for 10 days in February, then going elsewhere, then stopping back off in India on my way back home (from Thailand) in April. As a result, I got a six month visa to cover my back. As far as I can see it doesn't matter that it's longer than my actual stay in the country.

I've got my appointment tomorrow at the Indian consulate place (I'm not using an agency) hopefully I won't be there too long!

You can get single and multi entry - I think they're the same price but make sure you get the latter!

The Indian call centre lady asked...and where is this place called Cruise, please?

Oh, how we laughed...smile
