Hi there folks I am on a week long course in the states in November in Houston and once it is done the missus is planning to fly out and meet me in Houston. Any suggestions on destinations within relatively close proximity that we could fly to?

I'm moving to Dallas next year so have been checking this out as I would like to travel about a bit for long weekends etc, everything seems to be within a 2.5 hour flight or less with Hawaii and Alaska being the exceptions to that so it would depend what your are looking for really, outdoors, cities etc. if you've never been before Vegas is a pretty short flight.

I'd rent a car, rather than fly - San Antonio TX is a great place for a visit (Houston isn't) and an easy ride, west on I-10 - keep going west to Corpus Christi, or NW to Big Bend NP - or you could head east to New Orleans (not my preference, but a major destination city in the south).

Dallas itself is ace as a place to go for a weekend - lots to do.

Austin is the college town and is a little more liberal than Dallas.

Please share - I work in Dallas a lot and I've found it to be a bit dull, to be honest.

Thanks for the help folks looks like the missus canna make it out so it will be a week in houston myself. Dallas is a very underestimated place I was there for a month in 2009 and thought it was ace. Lots of good eats and bars stayed in the Crowne Plaza in addison close by to Dukes bar and grill which was very good

Another one for San Antonio as well - really nice city. The river ride thing is very pleasant and the bars and restaurants are a nice place to sink a few and eat. Very simple to get to, go round the outer ringroad and go West.

Also worth going to the Alamo - the US version of Rorke's Drift ('cept they lost hehe).

I really like it too, plenty to do, but very spread out. Good bars, restaurants, gold courses etc.

Austin is cool. Great music and awesome nightlife.

Also this

Failing that drive to New Orleans and go via the casinos in Lake Charles/Baton Rouge.

This it's a great city.

Someone else also mention Big Bend National Park....is the great outdoors is your thing it doesn't get much greater. Stunning. If you like things like Mountain Biking or White Water Rafting your can do all that there too.

November...are you actually in Texas for the GP? Might be worth a trip. Austin is a hell of a town.

I have to say that having not gone to the US for a while, I really enjoyed the recent trip to Houston & San Antonio. We were over for a family event and stayed for 8 days. Rented a really nice house in San Antonio and had the surprise of sitting by the pool and having deer wander into the garden. Then we stayed with some cousins in Katy just West of Houston in their, quite frankly, ridiculously amazing house - he's a CEO of an Oil something or other consultancy.

Moreover, we just found everyone very well mannered, polite, helpful and generally very nice - the 'youths' were the big surprise as well. AS before - very polite and respectful etc...

Did a road trip from Austin to pensicola during the summer so might not be the right season for you.

Stopped of at an oil museum in Beaumont, then on to new Orleans(check out 9th ward and bourbon street) via some nice back roads and deep south towns. Next up was a nice navy museum in mobile alabama(if you have time go up Birmingham to see the home of NASCAR). After that was pensicola a famous beach town just inside the Florida state line. I backtracked a different route via the red neck Rivera and took a ferry across mobile bay(serious oil rig bay) and from there the tourist coast road back to Houston.

I've been to a fair few states in the us and I have to admit my best memories are the road trips through random towns so take full advantage while you can

As above really, Austin Tx is probably the best city I've ever been to.

Go to the warehouse district for drinks if your a little older or to 6th st if your a young scamp.

Something different then honestly you must try The Broken Spoke which is a proper C&W bar. I loved it. Just make sure you wear your Stetson. The continental club is also very good.

Food wise your pretty spoilt, but I enjoyed Chueys Mexican.

I'll think of some more.

Oh yeah if you've access to a car and I suspect you will then go to Coopers BBQ proper authentic Texan BBQ

You can google all these.
