24 hours in LA with a Corvette
Discussion
In April I will have a day off in LA before flying home. So I've done the only sensible thing to do, hired a Corvette.
Now, I'd like suggestions as to what to do, and before people scream "Leave LA, it's horrible", I love the city and part of me thinks of it as home However, it's not the best place to have a sports car.
I'd normally stay in the Westwood or Santa Monica area, but quite fancy heading to hills and having a play. Does anybody know a nice place, that's reasonable in terms of cost slightly further north, up the coast. Also, what are the nice roads to go and have a play on?

Laguna Seca is a few hours away, you could take the 101 up the coast? Santa Barbera would be worth a look if you're passing
It's about 5 hours away if you take the direct route! I would rather stay close to LA, Malibu and around the hills to the north. I've done 101 and few times and sprinting up and down wouldn't be that much fun.Edited by andy-xr on Monday 4th March 07:22

I drove from San Francisco to Laguna Seca earlier this year. I hired a Challenger but got screwed because I wound up with a bloody Sebring, so I let my pal drive the bugger instead. Mind you, we'd not long been out of SF when we saw a red double decker bus and a couple of London taxi cabs parked outside a building which turned out to be an " Olde Englishe Pubbe ", so we stopped there. Turned out to be owned by a Brit who'd emigrated some years ago from the village next to mine in England, so much fine British ale and Kentucky bourbon was consumed. A good time was had by all. Even the Sebring seemed OK after that.David Beer said:
If you are up for a drive, palm springs over the hill to San Diego , one of the nicest roads to do.
I am up for a drive, I will have a look into that one. It all comes down to how bad my hang over is (flying in from a week in Vegas) as to how much of a drive I will be keen on!Ok the road from Vegas to palm springs would also be up there, through Amboy(Roy's cafe), but I guess that it not what you are after. The road from palm springs to San Diego I did the day of 9/11! Quite quiet that day. In fact I was on the first flight out of LA, scary!
Back to the road from ps to sd, hair pins going up thousands of feet, looking at the cars in the valley, left after coming off the road. Drove a camaro ss convertable against a highly modified pick up, for 30 odd miles, having a griff 500, I gave a good go.

My plan is about 8 days in Vegas working on a trade show. I will, no doubt end up a mess on Thursday, fly to LA on the 5pm out of Vegas, pick up the 'Vette and fly out of LAX the following day at 10pm.
So I'm happy to wander about, but don't want to spend a lot of time on the freeway. I like to see what the roads around Topanga Canyon are like, but I think I know the route you are talking of.

Nope, up in the hills above LA http://goo.gl/maps/0ZDyq
It'll be 14 hours' driving if you go all the way to San Francisco and back, but the best bit is south of Monterey - if you turn back there it's a bit less than 12, and you could stop in Monterey for the night.

In that case, get it done.

I've done that a few times now, it's my favorite place on earth.http://goo.gl/maps/0ZDyq

I'm sat in LAX now with a forehead that matches the tail of the Virgin flight I'm about to catch, I had the roof down and didn't think it was that hot! The road in question was Angeles Crest, a stunning piece of tarmac draped over the mountains to the north. I have a few snaps, but I was a little busy driving
I also have a clip from the couple of tunnels near the middle of the road, but the sound isn't that great, I couldn't find my GoPro before flying out.
This is a photo from a trip a few years back:
