I'm looking at changing my current luggage as its looking tired and was considering the aluminum cases from RIMOWA, does anybody have any experiences with these? Are they worth the money?

I assume you don't fly economy? If you do, then the metal Rimowa luggage will take a large chunk of your weight allowance!

Have used rimowa as carry on, and its great-albeit heavier than some, although the salsa ultralight range solves that slightly.

Dont ever check in a rimowa!

I switched to tumi, partially due to weight issues, and also as i often fly on smaller jets with awkward overheads and my tumi has a bit of 'give' in the non rigid shape, whereas the rimowa doesnt.

Why would you say never to check in a RENOWA, are you pertaining to it picking up a little character from the handlers on the way?

I was looking at the Topas range and considering an attaché case, cabin trolley, and large case. Is there a better alternative?

Character is one thing, whacking great dents is another. Locks are also the weak point and are integral (although rimowa are good with after sales care).

Bit like leather luggage, there is a point at which the knocks they take look good... assuming that's the look you want. But have always been concerned about the first scratches/intermediate stage.

Not sure if it's still the case ('scuse pun) but if you're going Tumi, it used to be well worth buying in US or pre-ordering from one of the airside (VAT free) luggage shops.

I agree with you there on the leather. I have a leather Mulberry hand carry that's looking worn out after a year, hence looking at the Rimowa.

I was planning to buy when I'm next in Bangkok as I have a 10% expat discount card for Paragon, and then claim the VAT refund on the way out.

I've had a quick look on ebay, and the luggage seems to hold value well, to the point it's not worth buying used.
