Planning a quick sortie over to France via Eurotunnel, get there Sat before lunch, leave Sunday just after lunch. Apart from the likes of Bruges, what is nice nearby. I went to Bologne years ago and it was OK-ish, has it changed? Where is there a bustling market to explore nearby? What is Le Touquet like? Dead at this time of year?

Le Touquet is very nice and you may find a Sunday morning Market, but then you may not at this time of year. Look for one on the Saturday if you can. Wimereux above Boulogne has a nice 1st floor Restaurant overlooking the sea i seem to remember.
Inland try St-Omer it may just have that market.

Get yourself down to Montreuil Sur Mer (Which is not anywhere near sur mer these days)
Its delightful, has old ramparts, lovely squares and some great little restaurants

Arras - about an hour and a half from Calais but well worth it.

Along the same lines as above, Saint Valery Sur Somme is also lovely. Had a fab lunch there a couple of years back in a weird jazz themed café.... Good market on Sundays too.. If you see a black Skyline and a purple Corrado on UK plates when you are there, give us a wave - am in Montreuil early Dec with friends doing exactly what you are planning! smile

Le Touquet will be dead at this time of year - just your typical, rain lashed seaside resort - when I used to live over there I used to go there quite a lot.

These days there's a motorway so Amiens isn't far away - hour and a half. There's a fairly decent market there, possibly the best cathedral in the world, various WW1 related stuff to see. I'm off there on the 22nd to see friends as I used to work there.

A similar distance away there's Lille which has got a lovely big square and there's a fair bit to see.

At this time of year I think I'd be sticking to somewhere like this, smaller places or seaside resorts might be very miserable if the weather is bad.
