Thought I might punt this in - due to the fact lots of people do think skiing is s hugely expensive holiday and simply cannot justify it. Well there are options which offer ski holidays at 25% of the cost which suddenly opens the door to new to skiing customers / or those who woulld love to go more often but even bi annually is a push.
I've never tried a top end resort as yet and I will at some point & accept what will be a high cost (we can only go Feb half term). As such it's impossible for me to qualify is one resort 4x better and not just subjective but enough for you to put your hand in pocket.
A friend who is Polish grew up in a little place in South Western Poland a couple of miles away from a ski resort. The Google Earth pics and then actual piste runs etc it looks great and it's super cheap, she stated when she grew up it was nearly all Polish who went there but roll on 25 years and little has changed. She isn't a skier or boarder so cannot comment on what its like to ski there. The village is strictly traditional style too so lots of pluses.
Does anyone go to Andora anymore?

It's going to be a very interesting year next year.
I'll be 54 in May and I've skiied every year since I was 20, but my wife broke her knee in February and now says, recovered or not, that's her done for skiing (she's a keen walker and doesn't fancy risking that for a few more seasons' skiing).
So, the question will be whether I go alone, find some like minded friends (and few of my friends ski any more) or just give up and go diving instead...

Can you not both still go to the mountains and find a resort that has off mountain activities and then you split the day, you ski in the morning and spend the afternoons with your wife..I'll be 54 in May and I've skiied every year since I was 20, but my wife broke her knee in February and now says, recovered or not, that's her done for skiing (she's a keen walker and doesn't fancy risking that for a few more seasons' skiing).

i've started having a look about for new winter already, the company we used last year are doing a pretty good deal offering 'free' lift passes for any xmas/newyear/january holiday booked before end of july, which could be a fairly chunky saving!
however i can see why they're having to do this- xmas/NY weeks are running tues/tues because xmas day/newyears day falls on the sunday. then the first week in january is going to be a tuesday-sunday short trip, then get back into weekend to weekend trips. this is very annoying as i usually have to take 2wks off work over xmas/ny and i can normally work right up to xmas even then take the first week in january off, but not next year! might have to go last week in january and take advantage of the cheap lift pass deals

Nothing booked yet as we are looking for recommendations for our first family skiing holiday. Ideally as hassle free (i.e. packaged) as possible, and suitable ski school for a 5yo and 3yo, pool etc pretty much essential for non-skiing days. Not bothered about apres-ski as obviously we'll have the kids with us. Don't mind driving down, but as most kit (especially the kids) will be hired, flights not a major issue.
Suggestions welcome.

For a completely different ski holiday I have booked Levi in Finland (a good way north of the Artic Circle) for the New Year period. Due to the time of year there is only about 6 hours of daylight but plenty of skiing by floodlight. It's going to be damn cold with temps possibly dropping to -35c/-40c. However, its not just the skiing, also on offer are snowmobiles, ice karting, dog sledging, ice fishing and other Laplandish things. The best thing though is I have booked a day at a Finnish rally centre hooning around on the frozen lakes.

She has suggested that, but I know I'd be bored out of my mind in a ski resort if I couldn't ski...

You need new friends, marcosgt
I do know a few people who might be up for a few days skiing, so maybe that'll be the approach. It's that or diving in the Maldives!
I really fancied skiing in Saalbach, though...
