As above really, off to Olu Deniz in Turkey this weekend but not sure which currency is best to take. Was just going to take Lira but i've heard it's probably more useful to take Euros??

Thought Turkey would be a good choice to escape the awful euro exchange rate at the moment but it would seem maybe not so!

Anyone been recently?

Cheers,

Dan

Euros.

Nice tidy place... infact its lovely!... great for the family in Olu Deniz.

I stayed in Kos and number of years ago - LOVED IT! Not too far away.

and went to Kalkan last year - just down the road from Olu Deniz.

Not sure what you are looking for, but there is plenty of adventure / history there as well as nice beeches & great food. The fruit & veg in that area is brilliant.

Make a bit of an effort with the locals too, they are great people. If you are looking real adventure, hire a car and get involved!!! Some crazy roads and plenty to travel for.

....Geeees I'm jealous!!

I went with a group of friends last summer and some of us got liras and some just used euros. Generally those that used euros got a better deal and they were accepted everywhere.

This may of course be different now!

Enjoy, it is a beautiful place!

The whole point of going to Turkey this year is to be outside of the Euro-zone!

Use local currency.

Totally agree - and don't take any cash - that's what ATMs are for when you're there, and you will allways get a better rate that way than when using any of the rip-off cash exchange folk at airports...

When I was there two years ago the Turks did not like their own currency. They preferred Euros or Dollars. The exchange rate for the YTL fluctuated considerably even intra day, by as much as 5%.

Certainly when bartering for stuff in the markets their first price was always Euros and if you said lira the rate they used to convert from Euros was piss poor.

So, unless things have changed considerably over the past two years it would be Euros for me. I think.

Most resorts in Turkey will happily deal in YTL, Euros or Sterling.
We take a bundle of cash in sterling and change some up to YTL as and when we need it. Just bear in mind that most people will only take sterling notes and not coins, and if you pay in sterling your change will be in YTL.
Buying Euros at a crap rate to spend in Turkey would just be plain dumb.
