I'll keep this brief....recently (7th December) flew into Verona and hired a Passat Estate from Locauto, a well known, Italian rental firm.

Had the car for 3 days a travelled 1500 miles! returned the car with NO DAMAGE AT ALL....you probably know where this is going now don't you! rolleyes

So, just looked at the bank statement and have seen the original hire charge then 2 days later another charge for £295!!!

A call to their customer services and yes, you've guessed it....apparently we damaged the car!

The car was looked over and signed off when we dropped it off but I can't remember being given any paperwork! so, yes, you could say I was being naive for not checking that we had paperwork but I really didnt thing they'd pull this fast one! S!!!!

Customer services said I'd have to send them an e-mail to get a copy of the document that I signed to say that I agreed there was damage and until then they would be keeping MY money in their account!

Seems its not the first time this has happened: https://sites.google.com/site/dontrentlocauto/the-...

Just a warning to you all really!

Firstly Locauto is a big Italian rental firm and secondly I've contacted my credit card company and they wont 'chargeback' a car rental company....its in the small print!

OP - did you use CarHire3000 to end up hooked up with Locauto?
Dont get me started....I always use CarHire3000 (Now called Rentalcars.com) and on this particular occasion I did...they used Europcar at Verona airport. Everything was fine until...they showed us the 'Golf Equivalent' car they had in store for us. It was a Lancia Musa 1.4 Diesel, the crappiest car I have EVER seen. They said that, yes, it was a Golf equivalent and it was all they had! We cancelled and ended up having to pay top dollar to get the VW Passat (remember we were doing 1500 miles in 3 days) from LocAuto that we ended up with. Im currently having a barny with them to for this 'cock up'!

So after a lot of e-mail ping pong.....Basically when we dropped the car of we wernt given out copy of the paperwork. We signed it, they kept our half and filled the damage in afterwards making it look like we'd signed for the damage!

My last e-mail to them was:

Dear ****

I have looked at the check in sheet.
We were NOT given a copy of this sheet!
The damage has been added to the after we had signed it!
We will be contacting International Trading Standards, EVERY motoring website has already been contacted and we are currently considering contacting the police in relation to this.
You’re company if committing a serious offence by doing this.
We want our money refunded immediately.

Just received this:

Dear Customer

We have discuss again your case with our office manager , as a commercial gesture Locauto will assume the 50% of the cost of the damage caused during your rental and we offer a refund of € 122.76.
We will charge back the amount on your credit card and as soon as possible we will send the receive of charge back.
Regards

Should I:

a)Except their 'kind' offer? I'll be honest with you, I never thought I'd get a bean back!

or

b)Go for the other 50% as they have accepted responsibility?

Keep going mate. If they have given up 50 per cent chances are they are going to be willing to give up the rest. It should only be a matter of time.
Contacted Santander and demanded that they got our money back (Chargeback).....they did, full refund! Result! smile
