On a bookshelf there are ten volumes of an encyclopedia. Each front and back cover is 0.25" thick and the total thickness of pages between the covers is 1.5".

What is the distance between page 1 of Volume 1 and the final page of Volume 10 ?

How thick are the pages?

How many pages per volume?

It'll be 16.5"

Think about where page one and the last page is when you stand books up on a book shelf.

Nope, they are arranged 1-10, in order, horizontally left to right as you look at the shelf.

You sure about that?

10 x 1.5" for the contents of all 10 volumes = 15"

20 x 0.25" for all the covers = 5"

Minus the front cover of the first volume and back cover of the last volume = -0.5"

15 + 5 - 0.5 = 19.5
