Apologies for the borrrring thread, but someone stated to me that the UK uses more energy for lighting than China.

Googling hasn't produced an answer, so thought I'd ask the great PH knowledge base... do we run more lights than China?

I doubt it.
The countryside is fairly backward in regions, but all their cities make London look titchy.

I would be very surprised if China uses less energy than the UK.

Wiki says that the top 6 cities in the UK contain about 11M people, whereas the top 6 cities in china contain over 30M people.

I suspect someone has got their facts wrong.

It's a big mis-conception that China uses a lot of electricity.

Sure, there are a lot of people, but there simple aren't enough power stations to go around, and it's easily possible for the government officials to turn up at a factory and shut it down for a fortnight because there isn't enough electricity in the system.

This happened regularly at the boat factory, and caused no end of aggro.

Also, electricity is relatively very expensive, so everything is switched off overnight.

Even fairy lights down the river for the benefit of the tourists are switched off at 9pm, whereas in this country they'd be left on all night!

You'll see very few office buildings with the lights left on overnight, nothing like this country.

If you think they're one of the world's worst polluters, you've been reading too much 'Daily Mail'....

How many coal fired powerstations do they have?
How many does the UK have?

And they are opening a new one every week

By that link they're half the natural gas. Much more oil, though.

Interesting figures.

Yes, sure, imagine if it was.

But it isn't....

Well by your own post the limit of their use is not dictated by a noble and 'only what we need' attitude - it's the limit of how much they can make. So if they could make 50% more power, how much of that do you think they would use?

I'm not saying they would use more if it was available, only that it's possible for the government to ration it at the moment.

Yes, if power was available constantly, they would use more of it. But that's surely only rational?

If you could only go to work 3 days a week because there wasn't any power in the office, shirley you would go to work 5 days a week if there was no rationing?

Simple fact is, we need China's factories to produce 'stuff' for us, whether we like it of not. Giving them a hard time for using electricity and energy for doing this is slightly ridiculous....

My point was, as power wasters (not users), they are relatively conscientious. I bet if you look at power consumption per capita in China, it's far, far lower than the UK, and even further behind the US!

They are by their own admission using more power than ever, but they certainly don't waste or abuse the privilege in the same way that we (or Americans much worse) do.

Over a billion. But either way, that is not relevant to the question of which countries are amongst the worst polluters, which was your point. Hence my question about coal fired powerstations.

Yeah good points. We've had the luxury of cheap on-demand power for decades!

According to the CIA factbook

China 2.835 trillion kWh (2007)
UK 345.8 billion kWh (2007)

So not even close.

So that's, very approximatly,

5.7kWh p/p UK

2.8KWh p/p China

So, the Chinese use approximately half the amount of power per person that we do in the UK, going on these figures.

Makes us look pretty bad, I think.
