From a normal reasonably successful one....

I was meaning people like, Richard Branson, Philip Green, Bernie Ecclestone, Mike Ashley, Warren Buffett, Ken Morrison, Roman Abramovich, Rupert Murdoch, Sergey Brin etc.

Do they just have more drive, ambition, brains, guts, common sense or what??

some are just plain wkers.

bernie for example. a couple who live near me used to work with him back in the day and he would rape the living ste out of customers with no remorse.. and still rapes people for £££ when he has the chance..

otherwise, just very lucky with time/place

Warren is a bright guy, and made his money being unfashionably contrarian.

Of that list he is the one I admire the most

As already said, i would say, luck, or im Abramovich's case being a good party member, in the good old days. Also being a nasty fker, you dont tend to get rich by being nice to people. Or getting given shedloads of money by parents then making more from it.

I doubt any set out to be Billionaires - just to be successful businessmen. They lucked into something and had the courage or opportunity to maximise it. I think it requires perhaps a certain skill to see these opportunities.

Did Richard Branson think, when he started selling university rags that "one day, I'll own my own planes and trains"?

Risk is another factor. They will have all taken huge risks (financially) at some stage and the only justification for profit is risk.

Well at one time he was listed three years ago at 1.9b, but I understand he is down to a measly 800m these days......

I notice that none of these people are married to my wife.

Coincidence?

Along with starting a record label, backing a relatively unknown folkie, and hitting gold with Virgin 00001 a.k.a. Tubular Bells.
