Competitions - does anyone actually win?
Discussion
I've had Lorraine on this morning (shoot me now but it was only briefly) and there was a competition to win £25k etc etc. You can enter online for free. It made me think, why would someone pay £1.50 per message to enter, if you can do it for free online?
More to the point, do the online applications count the same as the paid ones?
And do people really win stuff from these competitions.
Has anyone ever won anything meaningful from competitions? I'm tempted to spend half an hour a day filling in as many as possible as at some point you've got to win something good... right?

I won a grand once, and I entered for free when you could pay per text.

People do win, it's all governed pretty seriously. They don't have to offer free entry to any competitions, it depends what their end objective is.
For example the Gadget Show used to be text/phone only but they wanted more data on the people watching so allowed free entry to their comps since the last series. There's only been a negligible drop in revenue from texts/calls but the amount of data they have from extra entrants who wouldn't have paid has made it worthwhile. The data can be used to market live events etc and the knock on effect is more profit long term.
All entries are dealt with equally, unless the organisation is a cowboy outfit, who don't last long anyway.
The Gambling Commission rules are pretty comlpilicated as to definitions between whether something is a competition, a lottery etc and little changes to the way they run can influence the rules quite dramatically. Free entry allows many things to happen that couldn't with paid entry. If everyone who enters recieves something the rules change again... it's a pain in the arse since the 2005 gambling act... it's so much more difficult to legally cheat people

Oh and... My parents have a lovely £3k american fridge freezer purely by luck but these things are never fixed you know
It used to be quite common for prizes to be coincidentally dispatched to friends of friends etc. Not so anymore in my experience (which is unfortunate as I'd be laughing!!!) Especially with the larger prizes and scrutiny of online comps. I dare say ones for closed user groups are more prone to being fixed!!

Ask Gretch.
A chap I worked with used to go 'Comping' entering as many competitions as he could, 100's each month via sites such as http://www.loquax.co.uk/
He won quite a lot each month, Ebay'ing the items he didn't want, lot of effort though.
