A mate of mine doesn't have much luck with the women. Absolutely nowt. I mean even less than me. At least girlies will come to chat to me because they think i'm interesting and a bit cool (if i may say so). But then i notice that he is always putting himself down. For examples on his Facebook he has posted :-

"X is going on a last-chance power drive .. though admitedly to collect some ironed shirts from his mum" [he drive a cool car and is a fan of The Boss]

So my question to the girlies (and guys) is .. Does it matter what people say about themselves? .. is it a better strategy in life to 'big oneself up' or just play it modest and hope someone will notice you for the shy modest intelligent type that you are.

If you're too self depricating, it's not going to give girls (or anybody else, for that matter) the impression they're going to enjoy spending time with you. Self esteem problems can be a sign of depression. If that's the cause, that needs sorting, girl or no girl.

There is no denying the opposite kind of person will wipe the floor with you though in women stakes.

Well there may be a cheesy polish bird on the scene soon, apparently all she needs to do is wave a glass around her head and he's in! hehe

All the first division swordsmen I have met have all had massive egos, usually tempered with just enough self deprecation to avoid looking like a total chopper.

Sadly I cannot count myself among their number, but if this approach can work for a short bald spastic like me (and it can) then it can work for anyone.

I think there is a difference between putting yourself down and taking the piss out of yourself though, I do the latter all the time. As the saying goes - those that can laugh at themselves will never cease to be amused. I wouldn't be attracted to a bloke who him bigs himself up all the time as I would see him as potential arrogant arse or complete bull stter.

I am just myself, I don't boast about the things I am good at and I can laugh at take the piss out the things I am bad at.

Your mates status just seems like a bit of self piss take, if his status were all.. boohoo me why is my life so crap, why can’t I get a women..etc.. then that would be a definite put off

Quietly confident. yes

Just be normal with a reasonable degree of self-confidence. Let people around you put you down, the women will then feel sympathy for you! biggrin

Surely it depends how you go about being grumpy? The majority of comedians have a grumpy, pissed-off persona and it's been said be a previous poster than a 'GSOH' is essential.

Miserable, moaning old git, yes that's bad, but I'm sure the ability to verbally destroy things you don't like in an entertaining way can't count against you? Better than being one of these bland irony-free zones who claims to like everything thus displaying no discernable personality.

Oh, absolutely. You only have to consult my good friend Dave2000 to realise that.

Yes. Yes I am.

I'm not for a moment suggesting that being the shy, retiring type has had me beating off the flange with a stty stick, because it hasn't.

However, I've done "all right" when it comes to women by simply being me. And I am someone who couldn't "big myself up" if I tried - that's just not me.

"All women love a bd", "Nice guys finish last" blah blah blah. Although there is some truth in these old adages, it doesn't mean that nice, non-bd blokes get nowhere.

Sometimes, softly softly catchy monkey.
