I can't think of two more dissimilar posting styles tbh. Nonse - king of the minimalist puns, Frank7 - more rambling than a Janet Street Porter convention.
Aaaanyway.
I'm in Darlington this week and I was expecting council gold, but the bits I've seen arent as bad as I was expecting.
There's an Aldi and an M&S next door to each other, always queues outside the M&S at lunchtime, straight in to the Aldi every day.
They have a Sainsbury, and some pleasant looking victorian housing, along with a town centre befitting of a Great North Road town,
Even the lass I saw walking down the street in fitness gear - she wasn't a stick insect,( starting to get in to Dog Star territory, but not very far down that road) but the grey yoga pants with the transparent sections that they all wear nowadays looked as if they were clean and fitted her - and she wasn't jogging along with a sausage roll in her hand or anything.
Something I notice and dislike (not so much this post, but there are plenty of others) - and it's very much evident on PH.

It's this sneering "looking down" on places "worst place in the UK" or whatever that goes on. Very often it will be some post-industrial northern town. Well no st, Sherlock! Place that has seen nineteenth century industry and housing now has post industrial decline and poorer areas, usually near the centres nowadays! And show me any big town or city that hasn't got at least one rough council estate!

Almost every time these places will have nice areas the equal of anything anywhere else (you also won't find the congestion and need to pave your front garden over) and easy access to a lot of countryside.

Remember all these gentrified areas of London, Manchester etc were pretty much slums not too many years ago.
Being a proper Northener myself I feel well versed to comment smile
The best bit of a suitably “mixed” area is that you can live in a nice bit but shop in a less gentrified bit. Need a plasterer, laborer, sparky or similar no problem. Carpets, suites etc no problem, need to loose some scrap metal no issue, cheap pint and good grub no problem, need a cleaner or gardener no problem etc etc. long may it continue.

I finished early today and driving through Darlington realised I’d not been through the town centre (well, round the north side of the ring road ) in daylight.

Hmmmm......

Well I'm going for double council.

I box.

In Darlington.

smile

And yes, like most towns, the west end is very nice indeed, the area around the train station is st and we don't talk about the area to the north of the town centre but it's more than likely the scrappies the earlier poster was accosted by have a lot of, err, family, around those parts. And dags.

Sadly boxing will lead to dags. And dags will lead to the thread being closed.

I suggest supercars.
What is it with 'dags'? Is it supposed to be Irish/traveller for dogs or something?

It's relentless and unfunny, like the frozen sausages trope, but how did we get here?

It's obviously not relentless if you don't yet know what it means.

While the trailer alone will probably clear up 'dags,' Snatch is worth a watch just because it's excellent.

It remains unfunny.

It wasn't intended to be funny, it was intended to be a warning that any discussion about boxing inevitably (rightly or wrongly) leads on to a discussion about travellers and all those threads have been closed since new management.

The almost total complete disappearance of shame in contemporary society is council.

As is things within our own control which are always someone else's fault.

I live 20 minutes south of Darlington. Beautiful buildings on the south side. But as you’ve seen it’s owned mainly by the Irish on the north. Some fairly interesting drives and gate posts on their houses.

Been lots of violence of late up there. Pre lockdown there was a spat between Darlo Irish and a bit further north. All got a bit heated with digging up loved ones graves and dumping corpses on drives!!!

All credit to her for getting her debt paid off by doing extra shifts though.

I witnessed part of that (not the corpses) but a 'hit' on one of family members. It was horrific. Posted about it on here year or two ago.

Actually come to think of it, Darlo is Council biggrin

£600 for a consultation and put to sleep? Don't think so. We paid around £300 for our Dane to be cremated.
