ASHP, hot water stored in a copper tank, all pressure fed off the mains.
Going even further O/T...

We're going to be swapping out our system in the next few months...any advice on ASHP? Costs / install headaches / etc?

We may have an issue in that our south-facing wall is 'outside the house' next to a pathway, so I'm not sure if we can (or should) put the heat-exchangers where they can be accessed by Joe Public...so we're probably going to end up sticking with gas. Which is fine now but may be a headache in future...
Stick them well above head height to discourage twits from meddling?

Women……..

Our eldest daughter is visiting and says she is off to run her son a bath.

She calls me up to the bathroom saying the hot tap in the sink is running cold.

Now having a few recent episodes of my “New” boiler tripping out, thinking FFS.

Get to the bathroom and indeed the hot tap is running cold.

Then I notice she has filled the bath just about to the brim.

Told her she had drained the hot water tank that’s why it’s now running cold, response

“Oh I didn’t know you had a tank”

Unless I am missing something, don’t all domesticated premises have a hot water storage tank?
Nope...combi-boilers don't smile
Every day is a school day right enough. beer

Sorry Vipers, but tanks and cylinders are old fashioned and becoming quite unusual.

I'm a residential surveyor and probably see one for every 30-40 combi boilers. FWIW I also have one but the house is 27 years old and has the original (now dated) hot water system. A year or so we had a house full of guests who drained our cylinder and we had the same conversation as you. Sorry to say but I suspect that you and I are a couple of dinosaurs.
Our house is 40 years old and had a new gas boiler only two years ago, but our tank has never ever run out before, doesn’t help when this day and age no one seems to know what a wash is, it’s either bath or shower.

there are multiple threads devoted to just what a nightmare these can be
And many of the contributors to those multiple threads are talking through their arses.
Absolutely no problems with ours, located west coast Scotland.
Properly designed & installed by people that know what they're doing.

Errm, No. We have a combi boiler and no tank and never had one.
Ours was build in 1966, with a hot tank with emersion heater and cold tank above it, and later when central heating was added a cold tank for that.
Then in 2009, we had a combi fitted. Almost instant hot water, all the tanks gone. The hot tank was in a cupboard between kitchen and dining room, so it was turned into a mini larder. In 2021, we removed the None structural bricks and made the kitchen and dining room one room.

My dear wife has just come to me "you can bulk buy them, however you have to buy 7 and the cost is £... "

I was like "what are you talking about?"

"dog treats"

Ahh yes she mentioned dog treats 90 minutes ago FFS!

Yesterday she's off out to book group, she's walking, has to be there 20:00, leaves at 19:50 (10 minute walk), get a text at 20:10 "I've lost my headphone on the walk FFS!", I respond along the lines, "retrace your steps, look with your phone torch"

Anyway she gets back home at 20:30; retracing steps, no sign of them, gets in "oh bloody hell I've not got the case either, where's that gone!"

Go's upstairs, "oh here's the case, FFS the other ear bud is in it too!"

They are a bloody mystery!

Thermostat wars continue...

Her - Why is the thermostat set to X?

Me - after trying many many combinations, this is the temp that we both agreed on that has the house comfortable for you coming home from work but isn't burning all our gas away.

Her - well it's too warm, set it to x-1

5 minutes later, i've changed nothing, temperature is exactly the same

Her - it's cold in here, turn the heating on

I think thermostats are a male only thing. My daughter has inheritted the issue from her Gran - I often get in the car and see the stat set to 28 as "it was cold that day!"

we have a hive and i've set up two automations - 'on' (set to a normal temp) and 'off' (set to a low temp). If you want the heating on, hit on, if you want it off, hit off.

From this weekend

I like this beach but it’s wrong
Last time we came on a Sunday afternoon the tide was out
This time it’s in, I thought it was the same every Sunday afternoon

She has a degree in geography and oceanography was one of the compulsory modules!

Yesterday, watching the news about what's been happening in Ecuador this week, kidnap, organs stolen/sold, arms smuggling.

The question was raised, "blimey, what would they want or do with human arms???"

A few seconds pass... "Oh, yeah."

Sweet bless smile

Given how the average cartel behaves, trading in human arms would be entirely on-brand.

Mrs Skodapondy was telling me in her usual enthusiastic way about who is taking part in Dancing on Ice (Not interested but you have to listen). She says "Greg Rutherford the sand pit guy is in it."
Me being me "Do you mean the gold medel winning long jumper?"
"Well it involves a sand pit doesn't it"
I just internally rolled my eyes and smiled sweetly.

My mother-in-law came round asking me to help show her why her car cover would no longer fit the car to protect it from frost.

I had to explain 3 times that it was her bbq cover.

My friends son has just moved into a new to him house . It's three years old , part of a modern estate of about 80 mixed houses. Big builder Berkley homes . All have gas central heating with hot water storage cylinders. They do have astonishing insulation though.

Fashion. We’re buying a new build. Phase 1had mains pressure hot water tanks. Phase 2 did not but installed an electric shower in the second en suites (Ooh lah-de-dah) as the combi couldn’t keep up with the occasions when three showers were on simultaneously. Progress….

My son was redoing one of his bathrooms, I suggested electric shower, just in case the combi boiler broke one day.
