You could look at any death as merely accelerating what was bound to happen at some point; it's always just a question of degree. Baby died 75 years early; bad. 80 year old dies 15 mins early coz doctor whacked up the morphine; good.
I think the issue is that some people are failing to recognise that many of the deaths that have been hastened by Covid19 infection haven't just taken 15 minutes off someone's life expectancy, it's taken years away.
Saying "oh well, he was already ill' about an individual may well be true and comforting to a degree, but when you step back and look at the numbers in aggregate you can see an awful lot of extra deaths have occurred this year even with the measures that have successfully reduced the infection's spread.
It's demonstratively different to the increased death rate caused by "normal" seasonal flus, for example.

Excess deaths would therefore be a better way to measure the relative performance across different reporting regimes, as it eliminates the question of reporting standards. A country has X number of deaths in a normal year to June; it has Y deaths this year; therefore Y-X will approximately show the impact of Covid.
I realise there will be other factors (fewer deaths on the roads for instance) but big picture, it will tell you what is really happening.
