Good chance of some Altantic storms around the weekend.
frown It's been great up to now, even if there hasn't been much snow.
Followed by plenty of hope for next week. Charts are all over the place, but they are showing anything but wet SWerlies!

Timeline is approximately the weekend after next - so 11/12 days away. This is a lifetime in weather and very likely to change.

Met Office haven't named the storm yet. Mail (and others) are guessing they will...

It shows how dull our weather is as, since the met office decided we should name big storm alphabetically two years ago, we've only got to "D".

From xmetman, for a few days ago - I'm the coldest blob on the south coast, same thing happened a few years back only even more localized and pronounced.

People laugh when I say when it's cold we are often the coldest area in the country.

I see the carrot of a return to cold later in February remains............ for now.
Must be true, verified by the Daily Mail !

1023 deaths caused by the -5 temps,

It comes after 1,023 more deaths than average were recorded in the week temperatures hit -5C this January, does that sound right, are people sleeping in the garden ?
The homeless are.
1023 homeless ?

Surely there would be an outcry, must be more to it ?

Generally colder temperatures (relative to the norm and more so in normally milder countries) result in 'excess deaths'.

To be clear, it doesn't mean that 1,023 frozen bodies are found, just that the death rate increases above the norm. There'll probably be all sorts of extra deaths ranging from respiratory problems, exacerbation of existing medical ailments, heart attacks right thorough to obvious cold related deaths like slips on ice.

If you're very old, and can't properly afford to heat your home then when it gets colder outside, it will get noticeably colder inside. In the course of my work I've been in the home of a young family in winter who couldn't afford gas, and it was about 10 degrees in the living room. That won't do an 80 year old much good...

Having run out of oil during that properly cold spell in 2010/11 I can concur, it is miserable. Ice on the inside of the windows sort of stuff.

My wife saw someone who put an extra bar on on the electric heater when she arrived (because you wouldn't want a guest to be uncomfortable, the woman was wearing 5 jumpers...). It was 9°c in the house. And she hadn't been able to go out so was living on mince pies and black coffee. eek

Friday's storm has yet to be named (Doris if it does) - doesn't seem particularly potent, gusts of up to 60mph:

As long as they don't land in my garden...

Is there a big protest planned as I didn't know anything about one at AWE or Burghfield?
