It occurred to me today that the the rule that 'its' isn't apostophised when used in the possessive sense is counter-intuitive.

We say "the dog played with the cat's toy"

But we also say "the cat played with its own toy", rather than "it's own toy".

For parity both - or neither - should have an apostrophe really.

Put "its" in with "his" and "hers" and it's easier to grasp.

One school of thought suggests the origin of the possessive apostrophe is explaining about, say, the coat belonging to Robert. "Robert, his coat." We now use the contraction, "Robert's coat."

Rogue apostrophes in names is particularly astonishing to my mind.

What a missed opportunity!

dhead's Driving With Mobile's Clamped To Their Ear's

That's better. There's always room for improvement.

I've just been in Philpott's in Manchester. They had:

  • 'Spicy Potatoe' (X2 on separate boards informing us what the soup of the day is)
  • NEW Jacket Potato's
  • Bite size roast potatos

Now I know this isn't an apostrophe outrage but I had to share it with someone.

To add to Lloyd Webber's problems, the Daily Telegraph can't spell prostate.

Prostrate cancer. That is woeful. Poor bloke.

I have an apostrophe in my name - when you spell it out on the phone half the folk either have no clue what you mean and ignore it altogether or put the piece of punctuation in closest proximity to their fingers on the keyboard. Quite a few go for a hyphen which I also have later on in the spelling of my name - that really confuses them.

Makes for some interesting post.

Because if no-one stands up for standards things get gradually worse. Just because large numbers of people 'get it wrong' doesn't mean we should accept the 'wrong' as the new 'right'.

Quick question.

I know it's accepted without, but would you use one with 'plane, or 'paper?

We still do... (At work that is.)
