The speed of my truck is limited and I am overtaken by all sorts of things. Yesterday a big old van pulling a trailer with what I later learned was a Legends Racing '37 Ford Sedan went past. Luckily, they were in Warwick Services when I pulled in.

The cars are mechanically pretty much identical with a choice of engine I didn't understand. It was something like, 1200 modifiable or 1250 sealed. This is the Yamaha 1250cc engine. Very friendly family team off to Scotland for a weekend of racing. The stuff that goes on that I know nothing about is amazing. Marvellous.

I'd have wanted a bigger steering wheel.

I'm allowed three weak jokes a day. The steering wheel reference is one of them.

All okay with that?

Words cannot describe how much I want one of these. Sadly even if I could afford one they're manual only weeping
Oh, do come along. You're an injermanear. You could have the one and only automatic.

It's just occurred to me that I have owned two French cars, a Citroen 2CV and Peugeot 205GTI 1.9, and they both had Citroen engines.

And on that bombshell.

From the Telegraph this morning about Hamilton starting - in principle - from 76th on the grid:

The restrictions on engines, limiting their use to just five a year, were designed to keep costs down. But all it has resulted in during this supposedly post-factual age are paradoxical statements such as: Hamilton could take a 75-place grid penalty but start 22nd.

Just five engines a year. I see.

Although not Formula 1, when I read stuff like this I remember the anecdote about John Wyer being spirited to Stuttgart to speak to the Porsche family about running their racing team. Wyer was overseeing the GT40 project at the time having taken Aston Martin to win the World Sportscar Championship in 1959.

Porsche: "In the 1959 season, how many cars do you think we had in the Porsche team?"
Wyer: "I don't know. Twenty four? Twenty five?"
Porsche: "Thirty one."
Wyer: "Ah."
Porsche: "How many did Aston Martin have?"
Wyer: "We had three cars and one spare engine. And we didn't use the spare engine."

Yes, I know they were different times. So much so, in fact, that when Wyer realised he had been spotted at Heathrow waiting for a plane to Germany he asked the journalist not to mention it. The journalist agreed and the meeting remained a secret. Like that would happen now.

There was an episode where Carstairs and Fairfax were standing in a field disguised as an unlikely looking cow and the female members of the Resistance had to cycle past but a bomb blew most of their clothes off.

"What's happening, Carstairs?"
"There are girls cycling past in their skanties."
"Yes, I know, but what's really happening?"

It was funny at the time. Maybe you had to be there.

Peter O'Toole and I took turns at being either Carstairs or Fairfax. We did it for years and no one ever noticed.

Penalised heavily and has to start from the front of the grid.

What about a 'Post Pictures Of Vehicles You've Seen That Interest You' thread? I get so much stick on the 'Cool Classic Cars Spotted' thread it's either start a new thread or post them on here. Oh no, hang on, some of them won't be trivial and then I'll be in trouble here as well.

Woe, woe and thrice woe.

Person who posted after your Scirocco just happened to have a job lot of stunners.

I don't know why people get so arsey about newer semi classics.

It's just pics on a forum.

Just carry on DC.

The van was pushing it a bit....biglaugh
It was his "How about some proper classics" that made me wonder if a new thread was called for. That way we could leave the snobs to search for their personal holy grail.

Yes, I knew the van was a bit much, but it was immaculate. And so well done. A labour of love.

Four days to Volume 28.

By my reckoning. By my - traditionally wildly inaccurate - reckoning.

The commencement of Volume 28 will mean 27 complete volumes comprising roughly 270,000 posts and 4,000,000 hits. For historical reasons, courtesy of a shaky start to the thread, it's actually more than that.

We should party.

Thursday for a Stag evening? Again, for historical reasons, it doesn't have to be in the evening and it doesn't have to be Stag.

Flexibility is the key.
