Try Penhaligon's Tragedy of Lord George
I really like Lord George. On my second bottle of it now.

Really quite different to Aventus, but gives a great ‘barbershop’ style smell. Shaving cream, woody, bit of tobacco/leather etc
Cheers chaps, just ordered a little tester but sounds like it’s right up my street, thanks thumbup

ETA - just browsing their website, feel like I should be wearing a monocle biggrin

Where did you find a tester? Seemingly out of stock on the Penhaligon's website.

They don't have any on either Scent Samples or Fragrance Samples

Long lasting and strong?

Amouage and Zoologist sound right up your street.

Amouage are more widely available though both have some fabulous scents.

Zoologist do a great sample set but beware that some, like Bat, Moth and Hyrax are quite challenging. Elephant, Macaque, Panda & Camel are all great.
Is this a wind-up? scratchchin

I remember Bonzo Dog used to promote "The sweet essence of Giraffe...". rofl
You'd think but they really do name all of their scents after animals and birds.

There's even a T-Rex one, which I've yet to try.

Maybe it’s just me, but I cannot imagine buying a fragrance that was called ‘Squid’.

I find the idea of smelling like a slimy ocean creature most off putting!

In other news, I mentioned a while ago that I had discovered ‘Parfums Vintage’, a house who allegedly make extremely good versions of Creed fragrances (and others). Longer lasting and more like the older batches of Aventus and so on. They appear to be well respected amongst reviewers.

I have ordered a 50ml bottle of their ‘Emperor Extrait’ which is their recreation of the 2014-2016 Aventus batches.

It cost me £77 inc delivery (they are having a 15% off sale at the moment).

I have owned 3 bottles of Aventus. From 2015, 2018 and 2020. I still remember the 2015 bottle as being head and shoulders above the later ones.

When it arrives I will give you my honest review and let you know if I have wasted £77, or if it is as good as Aventus smile

Yup, circa 2015 batches were peak Aventus, as far as I'm concerned.

Well lets just see if this recreation I have purchased delivers that 2015 vibe as promised.

They have developed, and currently sell, no less than 12 different variants of ‘Emperor’ to replicate the different batches of Aventus throughout the years, and so you can chose to go more pineapple or more smoky/woody.

We will see smile

On a similar note a few months ago I bought two fragrances from Armaf - Club de Nuit Intense and Tres Nuit. They are 'clones' of Aventus and Greed Irish Tweed. Not perfect but I'm very impressed with them for like £20 a bottle - worth a punt.

The other good Aventus-a-like is Mont Blanc Explorer. Smells very similar to Aventus and is really decent quality. After a couple of hours it smells slightly more towards Dior Sauvage, but a good smell all round.

New to this thread. Tried a fair bit of stuff over the years, but ones that have stuck with me;

Jo Malone; 154 and Earl Grey and cucumber
Diptyque Vetyverio
Tom Ford Grey Vetiver

Last year I jumped on the Ffern bandwagon (one seasonal bottle, each quarter) and they're working out well.

And got the Vilhelm "Dirty Velvet" for Christmas - which I really like.

After reading the last few pages of this thread I've just ordered a "3 100ml bottles for £40-odd" deal from The Essence Vault too. smile
(Aventus, oud wood, spice bomb)

Always happy to receive recommendations.

Not sure about the Beaver one either but it takes all sorts.

Bentley Intense - wow!!! How is this stuff only £30?!
Mine arrived yesterday (and was only £20).

It‘s very different to my usual style (generally fresh and citrusy) and seems to change in character over time. It‘s quite vanilla sweet, which I wasn‘t expecting from the description, but overall not unpleasant. Well worth the money.

At first try I thought Bentley was 'ok', but for the first 15 mins or so smells quite like 'Christmas scented candle' which seems the best way of describing it to me, but after a little while it really changes to a nice mellow boozy smell.

So yeah, straight after spraying smells not great, but it rapidly settles to a really nice smell to my nose, and certainly lasts for hours, and even days if it gets on clothing.
