Reminds me of a sci-fi film I saw yonks ago about the Titanic or some similar liner that had gone down, with a huge number of the crew & passengers surviving in an air pocket and the ship setting onto a thermal vent. They were able to harvest the energy and through lash up engineering had survived for generations on the sea bed. It was brilliant rubbish, so crap it was good sort of thing
NVM, wrong film.

why is the Mona Lisa so highly regarded? There are are surely hundreds of paintings at least as good or even better of people.
It's regarded as the perfection of a style of paining called 'sfumato' that had been tried previously but never attaining the same degree of effect. Added to which is that DaVinci applied his engineering eye to create a portrait that replicated natural bone structure rather than interpretations of this that had preceded it.

But art is often defined by its context so couple all that with his repertoire across art, invention and engineering, over time, the Mona Lisa gained a level of recognition that transcended its primary aim of simply being something nice to hang on
The last time I popped into Paris to visit the Louvre the Mona Lisa had become something that you only view over your on your iPhone. If you wanted to actually look directly at the painting you had to fight your way past 10 deep people with thier backs to it

Never think to gaze upon it, to bathe in its beauty,
enough to be photographed beside it, [ in portrait setting, natch ]

Second, why , if for instance you lean something against the wall quite safely, does it fall over at some later point? What has happened in the meantime?
Deterioration over time - cracking, water ingress, mortar aging, chemical changes or footings changes affecting the load path.

The dog wagged its tail near it. Yes, that dog, the one looking all innocent over there.

What is it in fish (occasionally shellfish too) that goes right through me? I had some smoked salmon last night for dinner which was still 'in date' but only just. Within two hours, massive stomach cramps. Yet sometimes (perhaps 25-30% of the time) I can eat fish with no ill effects at all. Happens with fish from the chippy too and has happened with the occasional prawn cocktail.

Is there something in fish that aggravates me that gets worse as it ages? Not to the point where it's off, but fresh vac pac salmon would be ok today, iffy by Friday/Saturday for me, but leaves my wife unaffected.

Mild allergy?

Probably some bacteria which reacts badly with your personal gut bacteria.

I get the same off chicken. I recently (well, a year ago) realised that I was eating it almost every day, and I was getting stomach cramps persistently. So I've given up eating it completely, feel much better since.

Dunno if that constitutes an "allergy", more of an "intolerance" probably. I've always had it with shellfish too - tried things like mussels, scallops a few times and was always violently sick. Doesn't happen with meaty fish or crustaceans though, just slimy stuff in shells. I call that an intolerance too, rather than an allergy. I stick to a vegetarian diet these days, I'm much calmer internally.

That's an annoyance that seems to be getting more and more common these days.

I went to see a band last night and a guy near us was filming most of it on his phone, so while everyone else was enjoying the show he was concentrating on his phone, and all he's got to show for it is some blurry footage, mostly in portrait but not even straight from what I could see, with st sound quality. I think his wife was starting to get a bit pissed off with him by the end too hehe

At the risk of getting all 'art-school-debating-society', one could look at this behaviour as art transcending via new medium to reach a wider audience in the same way it did when the ability to reproduce original art as prints was developed 120 years ago.

My wife plays in a couple of orchestras and at a recent concert in a church, the lady beside me thought it was a good idea to hold her phone up high to record the show. She was completely unaware that she was spoiling the view of everyone behind her. I gave her a few seconds in the hope that it was a short vid she was after. She got the hump but I was congratulated after by everyone sitting behind her.

Most people are cretins.

I was in an airport lounge and a bloke started watching a film on his tablet with the sound on. I gave him a minute then said "excuse me, I don't think your headphones are plugged in". He looked peeved but turned the sound off.

Then there are the parents who do the same with their kids playing noisy games for idiots or watching something equally annoying with the sound on. Annoying entitled s.

Just realised I'm in the wrong thread, so why do people feel entitled to do what they like with no regard to others?

100%, another trend from the last year or 2 is for these mouth breathers to walk along the pavement having a phone conversation, whilst holding their phone upside down and on speaker phone.

Are these people that inbred/high on their drug of choice/fking stupid that they need to be shown how a telephone is meant to be used? I have no interest in hearing whether a mouth breather's arse-wiper remembered to go to the shop to get their favourite meal for dinner, and i've no comprehension as to why these people would think otherwise.

More than "the last year or 2" and the reason is because they see it done on Reality(based) TV shows*. It's done on those shows so that the viewer can hear both sides of the conversation and these people think that this therefore how conversations should be held.

(* - even on shows that PHers would watch, like Fast n Loud, Wheeler Dealers, etc)

Local know-all says they can be done for cycling over the DD limit, I didn't argue, as I think it might be true.

Don't know the full list, but my favourite is

'wanton and furious cycling'.

Pretty sure they can be done for speeding if they have an appropriate means of determining speed (and therefore it's deliberate), but not if they don't.
