This.

Plus

My wife died; or

My daughter died

Those would truly finish me.

Thankfully neither currently apply to any childI know, my daughters (two) or my wife, but the concept is horrific.

I get where you’re coming from but occasionally morbid thoughts have taken me to a place where I thought about those scenarios and I think for me it would be the opposite.

If my wife or daughter passed away I don’t think I could function were it not for the sole purpose of getting the survivor through life after such a tragedy. It would literally be my sole point of being, to be fair it’s my sole point of being right now but it would be doubly important afte the loss of such an important member of our family.

Not picking holes in your post by the way but in adversity, strength is called upon.
