When did it become acceptable to put your child in the actual trolley in the supermarket when doing ones shopping, not the kiddies seat but the actual trolley, usually glued to an iPhone watching a video and we are talking kids of primary school age!

When I worked for Sainsburys as a student it was just not the done thing, no one did it and if you did, you were immediately told to stop by a member of staff, I'm seeing it more and more frequently and not from the type you may think.

When I looked after my grandson, when he was toddling about, he'd come to Sainsburys with me and I'd involve him in the shop, I'd ask him to grab stuff from the lower shelves, he'd help me push the trolley, it's just sad!
I remember sitting in the trolley as a kid, and I’m 51 now, so it’s probably been happening for a few years. I’ve also put my kids in the trolley. It’s easier than dragging them. Though I have had to abandon my trolley once when PB Jnr1 had a meltdown and carried her out of the shop under one arm.

I’ve also given my kids stuff to eat and then paid for it at the till. This to stave off the ensuing meltdown.

Before the obligatory Sanctimonious Parents step in, these are now well-adjusted kids who don’t always get what they want. Also we don’t all have grandparents on hand to help, or the ability to do stuff that needs to be done without taking our kids along.

However, I do live in Straya mate, and am clearly Council to the core.
I used to also go in the trolley as a kid and I now put my child in, otherwise she will run off somewhere (which has happened but she is very easy to find because she will be the only westerner kid within 800 meters!).

The term "council" as we use it won't make much sense to Australians. Maybe bogan or flog would be a better fit!
I don't want to put my shopping in a trolley where someone's kids have had their dog-stty feet.

Can I come and walk across your kitchen worktops in my dogwalking shoes?

It's a shame because the beach is actually okay as far as beaches go, but then you look behind you and see something resembling a warzone -- a truly sad and hideous place like landing on another planet. Literally every council box ticked.

A few little gems here.

Jaywick, unsurprisingly. A combination of council, addiction and hopelessness.

To be fair, they are very old streetviews - there has been a fair amount of roadworks down there recently, eg:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.7728394,1.106941...

It remains, however, the only place I have ever seen someone go out of their way to bring, and keep, a burnt out car on the driveway - You can tell it was brought there after the fire, as the act of burning the car would have taken out the shacks in the vicinity.

It's like a rural Soviet street in the 1950's

You need to sort your geography out. That's clearly Beirut.

It looks a lot like some of the smarter parts of Soweto.

THere's obviously been some money spent there in the last decade, as the streets have all been resurfaced

I do this with my three year old where the shop doesn't need a big trolley, and I'm pretty far from council (although I'm cognisant the council types would probably say that). He loves it. No phones in sight; we have a lovely time shopping and chatting rubbish.

It feels a bit cheap to call that council, it's just depressing, probably one of the most hopeless looking places I've seen in the UK - it looks more akin to a rural area in a former Soviet country frown

On Jaywick; this Streetview is particularly sad. The jocosely named Sunbeam Avenue, and the difference between 2009 and 2012.

Genuinely hard to imagine how this can exist in the UK in 2023; and what misery must have transpired before, during and after those images were taken.

I've put my dog in a shopping basket when she was a pup.

I walked passed an attractive nurse who was on a phone call, she dropped her phone in excitement and came to stroke the dog.
It was brilliant.
