I have been reading today that people are "bracing themselves" for it.

What exactly they are bracing against it's made clear however.

The usual crazies think it signals the end of the world/the rapture/demons - depressing how many people don't understand that it's simply the Moon and Sun lining up

Not made clear surely?

Anyway the answer is 'primitive emotions that make them want to run around like headless chickens screaming and babbling about the end of the world.'

The Americans are completely losing their minds over this nothingburger. National Guard army have been stationed on every street corner because reasons and a whole bunch of flights have been cancelled because eclipseconfused. Check-out American social media, they have gone completely bonkers, far more so than usual.

Lol. I only heard about this eclipse on R2 a couple of hours ago. I'll check Sky News in a bit.

Some Americans really do need a bit more resilience. They are so helpless. "Oh my God this is truly amazing, it's like somebody broke the sky."

Honestly though, a total eclipse is really cool, and really quite freaky. You guys probably don't understand, what with not being able to see the sun 99% of the time.

As of yesterday Pink Floyd “Eclipse” from Dark Side of The Moon sits at No. 8 on the U.S. iTunes chart.

I'd agree, have seen a number of eclipses, mostly partial obviously, over the years, first one recalled was 1961. As recently as 2015 when the total eclipse path passed close to the NW coast of the UK. Certainly where I was, out by the riverside with the dog it was very eery. The light was very strange, colours faded almost to monotone, things became very quiet, quite eery at times. Not sure what % of obscuration

Not anything to lose your self control over, but as a rare once in a lifetime experience can understand why people really want to see a total eclipse. Have people really forgotten the hoohah in SW England in 1999?

I think we got about 40% of the eclipse in 1999. I can't say I have much interest in astronomy but it is the sort of thing that I could tie into a holiday - looking at the route it will take across northern Spain in 2026 it goes over a few places I'd like to visit anyway.

I don't know why the BBC have this as a leading article for the UK, it isn't that exciting unless you actually see it yourself.

Not really, that's how planets behave.

Ha maybe but I'm a world leading authority on rain. Amazing stuff. It's like the sky's crying in despair because the sun's been on holiday so long.

Please can it stop raining soon. Someone make it stop.

Actually, that would be how the Moon and Sun behave with respect to this planet. I doubt any moon would be enough to give total eclipse on Mercury, Venus doesn't have a moon and you can't see through the atmosphere, Phobos is far too small to give a total solar eclipse on Mars. As you get farther our in the solar system, an eclipse of the sun is probably pretty anti-climactic. Someday, the Moon will be too far away to provide a total eclipse, and even farther down the road the Sun will be so big that a solar eclipse will be impossible. So bottom line is an impressive full solar eclipse is kind of specific to this planet and this timeframe (of a few million years?).

From today on the social media, flat-earthers and conspiracy nuts have been trying to explain how the eclipse happened.

"NASA fakery".
"Four black suns",
"The moon didn't cause the eclipse."
"Where did the moon go?"
"The eclipse didn't happen"

And many other silly explanations.
