You could survive by eating Fray Bentos steak pies for a couple of years.

I would've collected as much as possible (including taking extra freezers from shops and homes) pretty much immediately upon realising what had happened

I should say that for some reason I added the paragraph about having lots of food here after I'd written it. The 'then' was supposed to be linked to the first paragraph but I wasn't paying attention
Thing is though, how DO you realise what has happened?

'OK, this is a bit odd, Waitrose (this is PH after all) is a bit empty today. I must be the only human left alive on the entire planet'.

I don't think I'd ever realise I was the ONLY person. But you'd know something was off and after a couple of days you'd start just taking things you needed and wanted from shops, wouldn't you?

That is the basis of the thread, that you are the only person left. I think it would pivot on whether you knew this for sure or held out hope that you weren't.
If you knew for sure then what would be the point in carrying on and when would you come to terms with this. After a week? Month? Year? And then what? What would be the point in carrying on?

If I thought there was a chance then i'd probably be looking into becoming self sufficient; growing things on allotments or in greenhouses, rearing livestock etc.

Honestly, if it happened tomorrow I'd probably assume for quite a while that it was just a new school holiday I hadn't heard about and that people had jetted off somewhere warmer, while rationalising everything else.

Not sure how long it would take me to realise it had all gone tits up and that I could stop putting money into the counter.

Depending on your views on the afterlife, life is always pretty pointless as once you die, you're literally gone forever, there is nothing of you left to remember your life or any of your choices or actions.

So yeah I'd imagine it would sad to know that you'd never meet another human soul again, but in the grand scheme of things it wouldn't make your life any more pointless than it already is.

But I'd imagine that 99.99% of people would require human interaction in their life to remain sane, even if it's not direct, just being in the somewhat near presence of other people and life is probably a basic human necessity.

Living in Asia I think the first thing I would do is load up on medical supplies for all of the potentially nasty bd insects that would for sure start roaming around more freely.

Then masturbate furiously in all of the places I shouldn't, shoot stuff I shouldn't, drive faster than is safe, slowly going more and more off of the rails before getting bitten by something horrid and not having meds with me because I became blase about the whole situation.

You're absolutely fine, no zombies, no apocalypse just everyone's disappeared. The whole country/world is yours to do with as you wish.

What do you do?
Find a pub.

Pour myself a succession of cold beers. Drink them.

I agree though, this would not be fun at all. Ompossible to cope with psychologically.
Indeed. Buddha might help with the Om-possible coping bit. hehe
I've not read to the end of the the thread yet, has anyone suggested praying to god and swapping out yet another rib for a bit of 'mental' company?

Reminds me of the Tom Hanks film Castaway http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162222/?ref_=nm_flmg_...

There is a point in the film where he needs some rope. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f9BS0poSBs You know he thought about it and tested it out.

Doesn't answer my previous questions about how a non-official would access the service tunnel (which I think we've established probably isn't that difficult) but there's an interesting article/video about it here:

Would a food distribution place not have huge freezers rammed full of food that would last almost indefinitely? That'd be a good place to set up camp

I've planned my route to the Brabus factory to collect a 700bhp 6x6 G-Wagen. Gratuitous pic:

Just need to decide where I'd like to live now. A lot of places we want to live today are only desirable because of the other people who maintain the infrastructure. Would Monaco, for example, be such a great place to live if you were alone?

I'd like to drive through the streets of Pompeii, if they were wide enough for my Brabus.

I'd also like to drive over/through some of the modern "great" infrastructure roads, like the Chunnel (already ticked that off the list by the time I've collected my truck) like the Millau bridge, and Øresund Bridge/Drogden Tunnel in Denmark.

You might have to leave Europe altogether though. There are a LOT of nuclear power stations (434 according to the link below) that are going to cause you problems shortly after you wake up to find yourself alone in the world. Assuming you're no sailor (I'm not), you will be limited to this continent. Admittedly, we can drive a long way on this continent but to escape nuclear issues, you'll need to get into Africa or go east into Russia.

Mains power would be a few hours I'd have thought, water might be a couple of days maybe?
