Felt like a cross between an episode of KMKY and one of the audio books. Decent entertainment - and solid performance.

Hope you enjoy it, good way to start the weekend!
I saw it at Nottingham a couple of weeks ago. Very good. Did yours have random audience members shouting “DAN!” before the performance and during the interval? I know why they were doing it, but thought it a bit odd at the same time.
Enjoyed Partridge last night, quite a clever show with a lot of hits, if a few misses - and a few great one liners and quips. Most surprising was how much Mrs Abz enjoyed it, as usually she can’t stand him.

Talking of comedians doing sets as a character, did anyone see the Marcus Brigstocke stand-up where does the entire set in character as Lucifer? (Apart from occasionally breaking character like when the red makeup leaked into his eye)

It was on Amazon Prime or possibly Netflix (I forget which). It was quite funny in places

edit:
It was indeed on Amazon Prime and is called "Devil May Care".
See https://www.amazon.co.uk/Marcus-Brigstocke-Devil-M...

The Guardian review described it as "standard snark" and gave it 2/5, which I understand some PHers take to be a ringing endorsement as they automatically invert the scores that The Guardian gives. wink

Living in Belfast, at least in the ‘burbs I rarely notice a decent show is on. Saw Fern Brady earlier this year in the Black Box. Both her and the warm up act were excellent. Had my mate in equal measures of stitches laughing and relief that we hadn’t invited his 19 year old daughter with our spare ticket.

Saw Paddy Kielty in Portaferry recently. I am not a native so the, we’re Catholic/Prods/Mad thing is a bit lost on me and he wasn’t funny enough to engross me when we’d driven all the way from Belfast!

Crossing the water later this year for some Jerry Sadowitz in Greenock. Saw him in the late 90s when I was at Uni. I hope he is still as offensive.

I enjoyed Partridge too.

A friend had seen him in Manchester the previous week and was very disappointed but I don't really know what more you could expect of that character in a stage show.

My only gripe was that even though my politics are fairly well-aligned to Steve Coogan's, he let too many of his own views creep into the show rather than staying true to Partridge who I always view as an uber-Tory. Partridge would be a Mail reading, obsequious Johnson apologist, despairing at the "weakness" of the centre and the left but there were several gags at the expense of the Johnson clique in the show.

We are off to see Partridge at the O2 this Friday evening, looking forward to it.

Recent comedy viewing has been,

Ricky Gervais - Super nature - I must admit I did really enjoy this, very clever and his stage presence is immense. Some really funny bits in the show. I suspect there is a lot of stuff in the live act that didn't make the Netflix show as the performance was only about an hour and he was supping the beer very quickly between gags so I imagine there must have been some stuff that Netflix deemed a bit too strong. Maybe the Blu-ray will include the edits.

Jim Jeffries - This is me now - I love Jim but this wasn't up to his best stuff at all. A little disappointed really.

Jimmy Carr - Dark Materials - Yes pretty good but not his best work, saw him live at a small hall in Chatham once about 10 years ago, much better back then.

Going to re-watch some of the legend that was Bill Hicks this week, possibly my favourite ever stand up. So clever.

Women aren't funny. That is the opinion I have formed in my 58 years of life. Others may differ but I have never, ever, seen a female comedian(enne) that made my laugh. Not once.

I don't laugh easily, but I have seen a reasonable amount of live comedy from big names to people starting out. The only ones who made me properly laugh were men.

For me a lot of what I find funny is stuff to which I can directly relate. That's why I don't tend to find most American stand-up particularly enjoyable despite the huge success of the likes of Kevin Hart, Dave Chapelle et al.

As a bloke I find it harder to relate to women but that doesn't mean women aren't funny; It just means I'm less likely to find them funny. I would guess that the same could be said for a lot of us.

Women can be funny, its just maybe they are funny less of the time as a rule. Sarah Millican once made me laugh my socks off with her flavoured condom gag but the rest of her act was poor.

There was also a routine I was sent on Whattsapp of an older Jewish woman doing a gig in the states which was very funny but on the whole i find women comedians base their acts around their sexuality or race far too much for my own particular sense of humour.

But that's just my opinion, if other peoples opinions are different then i completely respect their right to take a different view than I do.

I do agree on the race thing.....as I read that I immediately remembered the Iranian woman, I think it is, and recently an Indian woman I saw on Live at the Apollo......both funny, but only thing I remember is them going on about their race.

I'm totally on board with that. It's a very fair comment and I completely agree with you. thumbup

I think what it kind of comes down to is what xkcd are getting at with this cartoon:

Anyway, that was all I was saying. I just think people should judge a comic on individual merit rather than tarring an entire group with the same brush, whether that group is a gender, a sexuality, a race, or whatever. You know?

That does happen. And gay comedians will almost always mention that they are gay. Tom Allen neatly lamp-shaded it once by quipping "it's all I've got!".

However, if you've experienced a lot of prejudice with that area of your life then it's going to be a big part of your life experience. And isn't a lot of stand-up comedy drawn from that?

One could argue that straight white male comedians probably don't feel the need to say, although Rhys James did a nice little skit on a stand-up segment on Mock the Week where he actually went there and it was quite funny.

I very rarely find female comediennes funny, and none are in what I would term the top echelon. Any hint of a chip on their shoulder about race, feminism etc and they are dead in the water

So, basically, if a female comedian doesn't behave exactly like a male white comedian then you aren't interested? wink

One of my least favourite comedians on stage is Jerry Seinfeld. His "observational" comedy is not remotely funny. However, put him in the Seinfeld Show, which he co wrote, and the result is just brilliant.

Well, we went to see Stratagem- Alan Partridge at the O2 this evening and left at the interval along with a good couple of hundred others.

Terrible and very disappointing, especially as someone who really is a Partridge fan, enjoyed everything he's done previously, TV stuff, Alpha Papa, audio books and the podcasts from the oast house, so really his easy audience to impress. Sadly it was a real let down and I made the call that it really wasn't good enough to warrant sitting for a 20 minute interval followed by another 45 minutes of drivel and then another hour or so getting out of the O2 car parks.

A real shame.

Would not recommend.
