Don't the Icelanders have bunkers where they store fish for months, rotting shark is a delicacy. Cut into the Earth, he could have popped down there?
No - seriously was nothing there. Plus his gear was old school vintage.

Ok. So around 7 years ago I was doing a road trip around Iceland - a brilliant drive as one road circles the whole island. On one of our last days the hotel we were staying in told us that whales had been spotted in the next bay along - obviously excited we jumped in the car and whizzed round. There wasn’t anywhere perfect to park so kinda just left the car (it was an extremely quiet place) - and ran over the various small stone hills to go and see the whales.

When we were returning to the car we got to the top of one of the mounds and there was a guy in old oil skin fishing gear by the car which was about 200m from us. I said to my partner “typical, the first person we’ve seen in 2 days and my cars in the way” - she totally saw him too. We decided to go more quickly so went down one side of the mound (losing sight of the car) and up the next one - but when we got to the top of that one the guy had totally vanished. We got to the car and looked everywhere for him, there was a derelict church structure that we fully looked round, even under the car. The guy was totally gone. There’s zero possibility of him going anywhere else.

I didn’t believe in ghosts before that - and even now I’m unsure. But we both saw something that totally can’t be explained. I later found out there was a ship wreck just off that beach. I’ll try and find out where we were.
Really...? zero?

How long was the walk from one mound to the other? Obviously you know the scene, but it's not easy to picture from the account (no offence).

BTW I do like stories like this, they're entertainment. It's fun to speculate about ghostly happens etc. but in reality it's always something boring.

I think it was actually Tim Minchin that said: "Throughout history, every mystery ever solved has turned out to be... not magic." True words.

Out of sight for 15-20 seconds.

I’m only saying what we both saw. We genuinely searched for this person in an area with no where to go - and subsequently I was quite upset by the whole incident as when you believe something so much (ghosts don’t exist) for so long and something like that happens it throws you. My ex and I never spoke about it to each other again.

There definitely was no other car.

Anyway - like I say - it’s unexplained and in a way can’t be explained. That’s all.

Nice one, thanks. Yeah, I can see what you mean now.

Just done it on a stop watch - more likely to have been 10-12 seconds.

Why did you search for the person? Why did you never speak about it again?

There was a person we both saw who vanished - we even checked the back seats of the car and boot before driving off.

Neither of us were comfortable with what happened so wasn’t discussed again. She recounted the story to my dad a while later. And without me knowing I then told him at a different time - he said our accounts were both the same.

It might just be me but if I, along with a friend of relative, had seen something seemingly inexplicable, I don't think I'd be able to stop talking about it. I guess I just don't understand why others wouldn't talk about it, if only to try and ascertain what happened.

This thread is an excellent example as to why some might want to keep it quiet.

ETA: And also from personal experience of 1 on 1 conversations with others about such things, you really get to see their true colours.

You can quite easily get a taste of the OTT vitriol which has been displayed here in places. Choose very carefully.

Despite being ugly, those reactions are ultimately very interesting though.

Well, no, that's not relevant in this instance because both people involved saw the same thing, so my question is why they didn't discuss it amongst themselves rather than not discussing it with others.

Fair enough.

Maybe they were both staunch skeptics, and it's just too uncomfortable then.

Hmm but if they were indeed staunch sceptics then surely that would be even more reason to discuss to reach a conclusion rather than not talk about it at all?

Have you seen some of the sceptics on here?? hehe

I can well imagine it rocking some people tbh. I'm sure the guy who has posted it will be back to explain more.

Could the entrance have been a disguised manhole cover with steps going down. Might have been hard to spot. Or just a trick of the light, causing an effect that looked like a fisherman in old style gear. Or as you walked around the mound, he did the same on the other side, so when you got to where he was, he was where you were?

Personally, I'm still going with the bunker theory. The cover could have had the same covering as the surrounding ground, so others couldn't spot it and steal his catch?
