The mystery of the policeman's missing shoes

There is an obvious answer - the whole story is a complete fabrication.
I'm assured not, although it does seem a reasonable assumption. My own 'explanation' is that he possibly didn't shut the front door behind him and as he'd taken his shoes off outside the front door, some mischievous kids saw him and while he was in the living room with the old lady, the kids sneaked in and pinched his shoes.
Quite how they got the shoes back again, though ... hmm, not sure now!

Really?. You know of kids who would sneak into someone's house, steal a policeman's shoes and then double their risk of being caught by returning to the house to replace the shoes exactly where they found them?.My own 'explanation' is that he possibly didn't shut the front door behind him and as he'd taken his shoes off outside the front door, some mischievous kids saw him and while he was in the living room with the old lady, the kids sneaked in and pinched his shoes.

Either the whole story is fiction or key elements have been omitted by the shoeless policeman in order to save face.
Mirrored door, when taking off boots you look at a different angle to where you actually are. (Looking at reflection places you opposite to your original place) collecting the boots you look to where you (mind) says they are but are not (this could be a seat behind a door)and a chair can be at the end of the hall.
Simples.
Simples.

He took his boots off before he entered.Simples.
The premises in question was a flat not a manor house so we have to assume that it was relatively small and didn't have multiple halls with numerous doors that could confuse anyone visiting.
He took his boots off outside and put the boots at the far side of the dresser(where they were found) . He then shuts the door behind him thinking that he has placed his boots right by the door. When he comes to look for his boots by the door they are not there as they are further up the hallway and the officer doesn't realise his mistake. The old lady finds them in the morning and places them by the door before/after she phones to say that the boots are there. When the policeman turns up they are where he thought they were all along.
