And C and A.

I used to buy a lot of clothes from them.

I know it wasn't cutting edge fashion but you could unearth some decent stuff and generous sizes too.

I used to use the big store in Hounslow West London, I thinks it's a Dreams bed store now.

Another loss is MFI, I guess IKEA was there main competitor.

I wonder if there will be others in the not too distant.

When I was a kid there was a shop called Homeworld near us, it sold everything from soft furnishings to TV's etc.

My grandad used to take us near Christmas as he'd be looking for something nice for my Grandma. I remember hours of fun in that place, watching all the amazing TV's hooked up to VCR's. I think of it this time of year as it's long gone (now a Tesco Extra) as is my grandad (long gone, not a tesco extra hehe ). Good times!
In Pool? I remember Homeworld, bought by first stereo there. They also had RC tanks at one point, I think. They were probably rubbish, but seemed amazing as a kid.

Didn't know Beatties had gone. I used to go in the one in Altrincham on the way home from school & ogle the RC cars and the Lego!

That was over 25 years ago now though which makes me feel oldeek

Henry's Records in Southampton.

What a place that was - used to spend hour upon hour in there, on the hunt for special editions, coloured vinyl, 'DJ Only' white labels and the like.

Closed in 1988 - great shame.

C&A and Woolworths are still operating over here, and they're both still dreadful.

This (x1 million).

Used to love spending time in our local shop in Newbury as a kid, it was what dreams were made of!

Beatties swallowed up by House Of Fraser about 10 years ago.

C&A retreated back to mainland europe 20 years ago.

MFI went bust, swallowing up all the pensions...

The ones swallowed up by House of Fraser were a different Beatties, being a department store and not a model shop

The model shops were actually Beatties of London (according to Wikipedia)

It won't mean anything to most of you, but in Bradford, there used to be a massive, posh department store.

it was called "Brown Muffs"

beat that for comedy value !

It became Rackhams, which of course is no more either.

I used to nick my Dad's Embassy Cigarette vouchers and take them to the fishing tackle shop in Poole as they would exchange them for Ragworms so that I could go fishing from the Quay.

Different times. biggrin

Yup, they had those big plastic Squares stuck around the outside that you could climb inside of. They stayed when it became Big W then got removed when Tesco took over!

Goldbergs in Edinburgh. Fascinating place as kid. Roof top cafe and it's very own menagerie.
