Aren't they supposed to pass through the digestive system of an elephant before they're authentic - or something?
Quite correct , the roaming herds of Elephants have become a nightmare in North America in recent times ,making them st a cowboy a day has helped with the cull .fttm said:

Avoid the oh so common Indiana Jones style that every men's wear department has been flogging for the last 25+ years.
If you are fairly minted then it's Bates in Jermyn St. Think £300-£700
If you are on something of a budget the Lock and Co. St James Street. £200-£400
If the coins aren't overflowing your pockets then Christys' Jermyn St. circa £100-£130
Top tip: allow them to advise you, especially on fit.
A man can be his own worst enemy when choosing a hat.

That's the Canadian made Tilly Hat.“Elephant trainer Michael Hackenberger of the Bowmanville (Ontario) Zoo, had his Tilley Hat snatched from his head and eaten by an elephant. Three times. Michael later would find and pick up his Hat, wash it thoroughly, and wear it. He had declined to accept a new Tilley Hat in order that we may have his well-traveled Tilley for our museum. (We were secretly pleased!)” Alex Tilley, Ontario

There's nothing better than a real country girl in a Stetson. Actually there is, a country girl in a Stetson in a jacked up truck.
Having worked in rural USAshire, what happens is...There are some nice looking teenage girls. Then they get to 18 and disappear off to college. Any that are left are thick, fat and ugly. The pretty ones don't come back.

I wear a Stetson on the last day of the work week or ceremonial activities. It's traditional wear of U.S. Army Cavalry and Air Cavalry.
Here's a library pic of the Cavalry Stetson.
They're not cheap either.

That really does not go with the rest of the outfit,Here's a library pic of the Cavalry Stetson.

Looks out of place, like a trilby with dinner jacket or a top hat and tracksuit.
I would not wear it. You need to have a word with the chap who designs the uniforms.

I think they look cool as fk!
Total mismatch. Need a dress uniform in a dark colour or a much lighter colour hat.Dark blue hat with light coloured jacket...not cool.
Also Oakley style wraparound sunglasses don't work with that shape of hat, they should have more of a classic aviator.
They need to put it all back in the dressing up box and try again!

I'm also a big fan of a fedora. In general I just wish hats were more of a thing again. I was in a production of Guys & Dolls a couple of years ago and the fedoras we wore looked great IMHO.Avoid the oh so common Indiana Jones style that every men's wear department has been flogging for the last 25+ years.

This.Anyway, if you decide that despite the ribbing you do want one, there's a few choices.
Felt/suede Stetson - light and comfy but not the easiest thing to keep in good condition. Often a set, hard cardboard form inside that can't be bent or crushed. Generally worn as a dress hat.
Leather Stetson - the original and IMO most authentic. Heavier, but tougher and reshapeable within reason.
Mine is one of these - the "Roxbury" model.
Resistol - not a Stetson brand hat, but these are what the genuine cowboys wear today. They are completely waterproof, crush proof and lightweight, the ideal hat for actual field use. However they do sacrifice some of the traditional looks to achieve this - as they are essentially a moulded piece of tarpaulin they do look and feel like it up close.

Yeah, that's the best thing in the world. What would I rather?
A "farmer's daughter" in a stetson and cowboy boots, sat in the tailgate of a pickup truck round a camp fire?
or a trashy barley-dressed Kardashian wannabe in a nightclub staggering around in massive heels after a few WKDs?
Tough choice....

Make it your thing The fedora/large trilby is making more of an appearance in London these days, especially between the autumn and spring seasons.
I rarely go out without one.
