Do chavs know they're chavs?
Discussion
Loads of people where I grew up tried to be chavs, well off enough backround. Just wanted to fit in with teh chavs they got on with.
Others just like acting/dressing that way. Others are just too thick to realise they are being chavs. Others are in a rut of being a chav and dont see how they can better themselves, stuck in a chain of low paying jobs etc.

Dumb question time! Where does the name come from, derivation?
Some people will suggest Council House And Violent, but I believe it originated from the Cheltenham Ladies College, the inmates of which I was known to occassionally frequent as a Teenager in the late eighties. They maintain it was coined to describe the local plebs, CHeltenham AVerage.Gypsies have called their kids 'chavvies' for years; as far as I'm aware 'chavs' is a derivation of that: poorly educated youngsters, always on the lookout for a bit of bling and a bit of trouble.

"The word may have its origins in Romani language.[7][8] One suggested etymology for "chav" is that it derives from the Romani word chavo, meaning boy (cf. "yob" - a reversal of boy).[8][9] This is similar to the colloquial Spanish word chaval and "Chavo", meaning "Kid" or "guy" which again is usually free from negative connotation. The Romani chavo appears to have transferred to the Nonantum, Massachusetts dialect as "chabby", though without the negative connotations of "chavo". The Kentish dialect used to refer to children as "Chaveys". [10] An alternative etymology suggests that pupils at Cheltenham Ladies' College and Cheltenham College used the word to describe the young men of the town ("Cheltenham Average").[9][11]
Many folk etymologies have sprung up around the word. These include the backronym "Council Housed And Violent".[4]
The term "chav" has regional variations, such as "charver" in Tyne and Wear and Northumberland, but not all of the North-East of England.[4]"
