I was under the impression that Corbyn wasn't planning on creating a government monopoly over the internet, just that he would provide a free baseline of FTTP broadband to all
And when the government control the infrastructure, at a level above the ISPs, then how do you think that's going to go with respect to RIPA / Snooper's Charter / ECHELON / PRISM / etc?
Not to go full conspiracy theory on you Agent Mulder... But they already do control the internets at a higher point. There are a limited number of cables in and out of the UK (or any country) and below them, Tier 1 network providers. Now if I were the secret shadow lizard govt, I'd start at the T1 providers.

Either that or have hidden back doors into the routers OS.

Perhaps. But it would be so much easier and less hassle to cut out the middle man and control the infrastructure.

Academic point anyway - it's just a "jam tomorrow" election promise.

To stay on topic, people who think wireless will replace wired just because a fancy new marketing term comes out (yep, there are no more G's defined by the ITU, it's all marketing) annoy me beyond reason... mostly because its an argument made by people who have no idea about the technology involved.
Some things never change - I had this exact same argument with someone back in the early 1990s who was complaining about the disruption in his office due to Cat5 cable being installed. They were adamant it was a waste of time because "they could just use wifi instead' - and this was at a time when wifi meant 802.11 2Mbps. It took a while to convince them that 2Mbps shared amongst the 50+ users in his office would be a lot slower than wired 100Mbps to each user biggrin

A few years ago I was working with a client in the telecoms sector, and the general feeling from the hardware guys and other domain experts was that LTE didn't really deserve the moniker "4G" as it was too closely related to 3G technology, but marketing wanted a new "G".

As I understand it, "5G" is even more marketing-led, as far as the technology goes.

Quite likely, but I haven't actually had a look at what J-Co is proposing as I'm on holiday at the moment (which I'm going back to the UK tomorrow to this bks, and that is annoying me beyond reason).

If it's like the original NBN proposal from Australia (before the LNP screwed it up), then it's a good thing the government provides the infrastructure, but the private sector provides the service. So the govt owns the fibre and is responsible for maintenance, upgrades and deployment, then sells it at a fixed price to any and all ISPs (Internet Service Providers) who wish to provide service. You still buy your internet from a private company, be it Virgin, BT, Plusnet, Bob's Backyard ISP, et al. and they all have to compete on service levels rather than who owns the infrastructure leading to your home.

It creates a more competitive environment as everyone has access to the same infrastructure at the same level and has to differentiate themselves on things like features and customer service.

It would be like the roads, govt deals with the tarmac, I buy my car from Honda, BMW, et al.

But as I said, I haven't read the proposal and have no intention of doing so until Monday smile

A couple of work colleagues I was talking to today said 'AM-A-ZONNE' about 20 times and really emphasised the last bit. I know 'Am-uh-zun' isn't quite right but it's much easier on the ears.
