Unless it's a trick of the light, the little bobble on the end of the nib looks like it is missing. As Robbo says, it will need some remedial work - either the nib ground down into a stub or else replaced. yes

I think you both are correct. I have looked at it a bit more and compared it to the pictures you put up and its definitely missing the bobble off of the end. I'm wondering if thats why it doesn't appear to have had much use...

That definitely doesn't look right. You can see where a bobble* should be. A nib certainly shouldn't end in two prongs.

(* - not the correct term for it, I am sure, but it conveys what I was trying to convey smile )

As CC has said, the nib is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Best advice is to look for a black Victory on ebay and you can then swap over the nib and filler units.

My wife received a fountain pen as part of a Christmas gift. It was in a Marks and Spencer set, and I have to say it writes beautifully.
Looking at it I would not be surprised if it was a Jinhao with custom markings. I have pictured it below and put it alongside my 159 at the bottom.

Currently filled with Diamine Delamare Green ink.

It is a Jinhao, the X450, great pens that work well and are nice to use. They also look very business like in black, much in the style of Montblancs.

I think that is what I am going to do. I got some money for Christmas that I hadn't really made any plans on what to do with so I am going to spend it on that

Thanks everybody for your help and advice

New addition to my collection...

Picked up a Dunhill AD2000 fountain pen on flea bay last week.

To say that I am happy with it is an understatement:

It is brand new, un-inked.

Looking forward to making good use of it and see how it compares to my Dunhill Sentryman carbon fibre FP.

Will report back.

The AD2000's feel a lot nicer in the hand than the Sentrymans imho, but the Sentryman's do look very special; I have a large range of AD's (2000's, 1800's and 1000's) but just one Sentryman, the silver carbon fibre Explorer II.

Knowing just how much Dunhills tend to go for new, just how much of a bargain was it ?

With any due respect, if I was JAGS I would say that was private and none of your business.

Thank you Robbo.

However I take no offence in the question and also have no guilt in spending my hard earned on the things I want (what's left of it after house/wife/kid expenses!).

To answer dapprman's question, it cost just a shade under £300.

I have no idea how much this version of the AD2000 was sold for when new back in the very late 90's. It's not really of any concern to me as the pen will not be sold on and I have zero interest in it's resale velue.

I liked it, wanted it, got it. Simple.

I've had a look through my, now vast, collection of pens and I'm going to get rid of a few.

Happy to offer the Jinhao / Baoer ones below free (plus converter) to any PHer that wants them - Just put your name by the one you want, drop me a PM with your address and I'll get them posted out.

Jinhao 250 Flighter (Fine) link
Jinhao 250 Black (Fine) link
Jinhao 500 Marbled Black (Fine) link
Jinhao 992 Transparent Blue (Fine) link
Jinhao 992 Transparent White (Fine) link
Baoer 801 Hooded nib in Yellow (Fine) link
Baoer 801 (Parker Vector clone) in Aurora pattern. (Medium) link
Baoer 388 in Blue / Black (Medium) link

They're all pretty new and used only once or twice as most.

The only things worth mentioning are that the yellow Baoer 801 doesn't post very well (the cap's a bit wobbly when you try to do so) and the lid on the Jinhao 500 doesnt close quite as securely as you'd expect, not sure why. They all write well.

I have quite a few Jinhao and Baoer pens, that I originally bought (thanks to this thread) to see what style I liked and then probably buy a more expensive pen or two. However I've never bothered buying the expensive ones as I get on fine with the cheap ones. One slight issue though, I find several of them dry up quickly, eg I was using my Jinhao 992 yesterday afternoon, left it on my desk overnight (with the lid on firmly), and this morning I had to dip it in my ink pot to get it to work. Is this less of an issue with better quality pens, or am I always going to need some ink or a bit of water on hand to start a pen?

With my Parker duofold, it was left capped and unused for a month over Christmas - once back at work it started first time as though it hadn't sat at all.

Not sure if that's typical, but is my experience of a 'better' pen.

Very generous offer from Ace, these pens are a great starting point for people who want to try and see how they get on with a fountain pen, some people just like the looks and for others they want to have better handwriting.

The pens are very good value, especially when you think that there is no reason why they will last a lifetime, you also need to spend a lot more money to have a significantly better pen. I have Montblancs that cost me over £650 but I also enjoy a £2 Jinhao.

The problem that you have Rizzo is not related to your particular pen. If it was mine I would go back to basics and flush the pen out in warm soapy water, make sure that there is no dried up ink behind the nib. Next step is to think how the pen is being left, if it is in an airconditionned room then I would put the pen in a drawer overnight, laid flat. perhaps even try putting you water pot in the drawer with the pen.

You can spend much more money and have the same problem, Parker Sonnets in particular are well known this problem and some people cure it by dropping melted candle wax into the cap to seal it, making it airtight. Try blowing into your cap and if a lot of air escapes other than through a vent hole then you may want to try something similar. Another idea is to dip the nib in your water pot before you put the pen away at night.
