My current favourite is the Mexican general Pancho Villa's supposed quotation as he lay dying and was asked if had any last words for his men: "Tell them...tell them I said something clever".

American Major General John Sedgwick, killed by a sniper in the Civil War; his ironic last words, "They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance."

My Grandfather once said to me;

"If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, you're probably right."

Stuck with me ever since.

Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re probably right.

That’s the proper version.

In fairness to Mr Sedgwick, he couldn’t have been aware he was facing the ‘ Whitworth sharpshooters’ using what was a very advanced and accurate rifle for the time.

“Time heals all wounds”, and “Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.”
If anyone had said that to me when I was supremely gutted that my inamorata had called it a day after eight years together, some forty years back, I would have smashed his face in.

Hardly a week goes by without me being reminded of this, by C.S.Lewis.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals."

“You never know how difficult it’s been for a person to get themselves out of bed this morning, so anytime you meet someone, just be nice.”

A line a friend of mine told me once, and one that I’ve very regularly told my lad. Also...

“Just don’t be a ”.

Not sure who said that, but I bet they weren’t a .
