Well that's just showing off!
Sorry I know, I just get really exited at this time of year. My board is standing up in my bedroom at the moment, and when the other half was out I slipped into all my gear just to check it still fitted. Very sad I know for a very middle aged bloke but I just cant help myselfroad hog said:
all I want to know is ,.....is it worth putting the winter wheels on the scooby yet or shall I stay indoors feet up watching cartoons...
Hmmm - well...The big news is the Atlantic dominated weather is about to end and... <drumroll> a high will form to the East. Just what we want to cause cold, snow, ice and general winter fun.
Big problem is the Europe hasn't cooled down enough - so it will bring frosty weather and dry sunny days. But no snow is likely.
The Beast from the East is rather gummy and has no teeth.

In terms of commuting to work, that isn't a bad thing. The big news is the Atlantic dominated weather is about to end and... <drumroll> a high will form to the East. Just what we want to cause cold, snow, ice and general winter fun.

@Puggit - have you been reading the OPI thread on Netweather? Could be a cold winter...
I haven't, but there's plenty of chatter about this everywhere. A very similar build up to one of the recent cold winters One thing I have been watching is the build up of snow across the northern hemisphere which is one of the best years on record. For example, in St Petersburg, Russia they have already had snow falling - when last winter they didn't see any until after Christmas!
Shows that every winter with opi of less than -1 has had a very cold winter.
Meanwhile in the USA: http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2014/11/17/n...
I wonder if it is actually record lows, seeing as last year was so cold? It seems all the weather places bang on about them, when they're actually just the coldest in the last 10 years or something. It just seems a way of supporting global warming/ extreme weather. Or they take very small areas as the headlines for national reports. An example is one in Norway at the moment - record warmth in November. Then in the story it says it's just likely to be the warmest for 10 years in part of Norway, with records maybe being broken in one village or some such.
I find this a useful resource for the US.

Always interesting going and comparing current temps to the historical records.
In this case, there are 2 days this month so far that were record lows - though I've not yet found a 'previous record', which would be nice to have.

A question for our resident Norweigans. If I was to drive North how far could I get with current snow conditions? And would I be able to see any Northern Lights there?
Generally you could get as far north as the Arctic circle with current conditions and going the fastest route (assuming no winter tyres) - I bought a new car a few weeks ago and drove it the 2000km north so have done it recently, . Once you get a bit north of a place called Mo i Rana you drive over a plateau called Saltfjellet, which is already covered in snow. It's where you cross the arctic circle, and it's like the deliberately created it to match what you exactly think the arctic is like. Once you go a bit further north it goes back to more "normal" Norwegian scenery (i.e. really nice but not "arctic". You can avoid Saltfjellet by taking the coastal route, which is supposed to be beautiful, but it takes 2 days and a lot of ferries.Northern lights are not guaranteed - I would try and be here at least a week if you want to be pretty sure of seeing them. However we've been having some fantastic displays this year, and there has been a lot more activity than last year. You'd probably want to get as far north as the arctic circle to increase the chances too. I have been seeing them an average of around twice a week since it started getting dark in August. I stay here:
