That sounds like the inspiration for a science-fiction short story (Clarke or Ballard I think) about an alien capsule that lands in a remote part of Asia.one of them 2 times convicted for same crime, even though completely innocent.

The "Norfolk Four" are four men, Derek Tice, Danial Williams, Joseph J. Dick Jr., and Eric C. Wilson, who were convicted in 1999 for the 1997 rape and murder of Michelle Moore-Bosko in Norfolk, Virginia. A federal judge ruled in 2016 that the four men, who were convicted based on a false confession, were actually innocent.[1]

Sounds like a fascinating character.
Have a read of his Wikipedia page with special note of what he used to do in between rounds sometimes. How professional sport has changed!
