Modern board/card games

Few games played over the weekend:
Gravwell
Recently got this after seeing a review online and was looking for something that was a bit easier going than most of the games I own. Extremely quick to teach the rules/mechanics. Ended up playing a couple of games on Friday and Saturday with different groups and was enjoyed by all both times. It does have a small amount of strategy but the randomness of the cards does level the field for all players. Better with 3 or 4 than just 2.
Lords of Waterdeep
Played a 2 player game on Saturday. Even though there's a few mechanics in the game the concept of collecting coloured cubes to complete the quests means that it's a very focused euro game. Have played this a few times now and the games are always close at the end and always enjoyable.
Duelosaur Island
Part of a recent Kickstarter that was delivered. I usually read the rules beforehand for a new a game but didn't get the chance with this one so it was more of a learning process for the first few rounds. Could be fun with more plays and playing with regular people who both know the rules/mechanics as we were winging some of the decisions through the start of the game.

https://www.tabletopsimulator.com/ and https://tabletopia.com/ give you a really good way to play online.
A lot of popular games have some form of online play that's been set up (eg. https://www.jinteki.net/ for Netrunner) - worth looking around on boardgamegeek pages for the games you want, there's usually something. There's a few engines and websites that let people set up basic rules/mechanics/turn tracking so while you may not have a licenced, perfect looking rendition if you're familiar with the game then you can still get things going.

I'm getting to grips with Tabletop Simulator to replace some regular gaming groups.
Also looking like (assuming we're not fully locked down) I'm going to be playing a batrep on one of the bigger wargaming channels in a couple of weeks - they're ramping up production loads to try and provide content to keep people sane (with loads of precautionary measures in place, I'll add). Plenty of painting to do to get ship shape for that! No one needs to see my current stuff in 4k!
We're also early on in an Age of Sigmar escalation league at my local store. Currently one option is for people to drop their armies off at mine - then I'll use the boy child to help two players "puppet" us to play their game. Fortunately, I have the space for this.
Otherwise, we've been playing some Pandemic and Carcassonne at home - got some expansions for C for Christmas we hadn't got round to incorporating. Plenty of time now (although work is bloody mental!).

Dragging this one up from the depths, since there's bugger all else to do in the evenings and we've run out of decent TV to watch, my Wife and I have been playing some board games in the evenings. Recently tried out Villagers https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/241724/village... which was easy to pick up and play, keen to give that another go at some point as whilst it was competitive it was all light-hearted and the art was great.
Main thing we've been playing though is Pandemic Legacy Season 0, loved the first game so much, but bounced off the second one and didn't get very far into it. This time round though we're four months in and it's already throwing loads of new mechanics and surprises into the mix. Loving the historical angle as it's set in 1962 with the CIA vs Soviet angle putting a new twist on the old mechanics. There's lots of little psychometric assessments coming up as the CIA bosses test you on simple little questions like whether you blame yourselves when things go wrong. Yet to see the major ramifications of those points come back to bite us yet but it's all adding to the theme and drawing us in. Highly recommended, even if you've not played the other games in the series.

Really glad to hear you're loving Season Zero - I picked it up at the weekend!
Loved Season One, but haven't played Season Two.
Awesome, think you're going to really enjoy it, even doing the little passports you get for each player is great as you get quite attached to your persona(s). Be good to see how things pan out for you once you finish it and see how different our experiences were.Loved Season One, but haven't played Season Two.
Picked up a few new games recently.
Dixit - great game to play as a group / family you are collecting and playing cards. You’d then say a word or saying like “cars” and then everyone plays the card they think best matches. Some blind voting happens and points awarded. It’s interesting how some people interpret words (or maybe don’t have good cards to play)
D-Day Dice - I wanted to play something solo (I’ve not done that before) and quite quick it’s dice rolling and whatever is on your dice goes onto a tracking card which you then use points to buy better troops to work your way up one of the multiple scenario boards. I’ve really enjoyed it so will look to get one of the expansions.
Azul - really nice pieces and quick to pickup and enjoyable. It gets frustrating if someone takes the pieces you want. The Mrs has beaten me twice so I’ve stopped playing for now!
My City this has just won game of the year and is a legacy game (can be played non legacy) we normally play with another couple (before multiple lockdowns) so have got it in anticipation of one day playing again. You all have matching pieces and a deck of cards decides what piece you all will play. It’s then up to you to fit it into your city. The more games you play the more extra pieces and rules that come into play.

I remember a completely different game called Dixit, it was a Scrabble/Crossword type board game with dice.Dixit - great game to play as a group / family you are collecting and playing cards. I really love Carcassonne! It's a fun game to play because it is a strategy game but it's easy enough, so anyone can enjoy it. There are also tons of expansions for it in case the base game feels too small.
Another game I really like is Dixit (especially with its new expansions from diceglory.com) . It's a game where teams take turns trying to guess the right words on the board with hints. I like playing this with my siblings because we know each other so well that the hints can get really obscure at times.

Having acquired Wingspan can say it's great, its got complexity but not overwhelming and is competitive but you get drawn into your own cards and enjoying them so it never focuses you too much on beating others. Even bought some 3d printed tokens to enhance an already good looking game!
Also working through Machi Koro legacy. Liking that a lot.

Wingspan has been a huge hit with friends and family which surprised me. The tutorial cards are great and as you don’t really know who’s winning you can have new players have their cards on show to help them. Also working through Machi Koro legacy. Liking that a lot.
Bought Wingspan a while back and really like. Simple concept but so many different ways you can go to try and maximise your score.
Some simple ones we play quite a bit are:
Regenwormen, for some reason it's called Heck Meck in the UK, simple dice game but good fun
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zoch-601125200-HECKMECK-B...
and Llama, which is a bit like Uno
https://www.amazon.co.uk/VR-Distribution-LLAMA-Car...
Apparently there's a Queens Gambit board game out, isn't that chess?

A bit of an update with a few games obtained recently.
Sagrada which is a dice game which has been enjoyed by all
Quacks of quendlingberg(sp?) A game of pushing luck I seem to always pull out the wrong ingredients and blow up but it’s good fun and does reward you for doing badly.
Undaunted Normandy, North Africa and reinforcements. Only had one solo play but fun and quick to play once I understood the rules.
I also have 2 games on kickstarter due soon V-Sabotage and heroes of normandie.
As for games played we completed my city with friends and really enjoyed the whole game although it’s legacy you can flip the birds and play a normal game. I’d happily buy another to play with a different group.

We got the Marvel version of Splendour for our son at Christmas...and it's proved to be very playable. Simple enough to pick up quickly, short enough to play in spare time (30-60 minutes), and quite tactical.
It's not the deepest game, to be fair- there are only a few real routes to winning, but the open-hand play style helps as it means you can react to what you perceive your opponents are doing and you can adjust your strategy to 'block'.
Have got Carcassonne hidden away for his birthday...see how that goes down.
