The 2018 summer and thunder thread
Discussion
What. A. Weekend.... (weather-wise!).
Pattern continues, high pressure over Scandinavia brings a weak easterly and some warm but not hot weather. Occasional thunder from the continent is possible in the South.
Atlantic weather makes enough nuisance of itself for Ireland/NI and NW Scotland. Could be really quite dreary for them.
Edit - no reason, at this point, to believe that the bank holiday weekend will be anything but a continuation. Anyone heading to the Med (like me!), weather should be pleasant enough, even though there's no high pressure. Importantly, there's not much low pressure there either! The Atlantic is well and truly blocked.

I'm going to Bordeaux next week, but the surf is going to be rubbish.
Lucky they have some wine to help me get over it.
The kayak is a Gumotex Seawave and is fantastic, very stable and tracks and glides well. It's more like a rigid sit on top than cheaper inflatable. We did 7 miles the other day without much effort and have been through the tide race off Peveril Point in Swanage in it.

And a little bit heavier too, so 300 hp will see it struggle to just under 40... with a clean bottom and at that speed not much more than 1 to the gallon, maybe 2 mpg on an economical cruise at around 24. Still, at least it isn’t in the major league where they talk multiple gallons to the mile.
I have about 80 miles to get it home at the weekend... £1.40 a litre, 4.5 litres to the gallon... so about £300 quid in fuel ...if we can complete the details for the transaction. Yes your boat really has its appeal
I have always felt a little nervous in canoe. I only tried once in the days when I was a poor swimmer but didn’t seem to get the skill or confidence not to capsize it even when just getting in! Would like to be able to use one, they seem really good fun, better than a tender to get up the beach. I may have to have a go again one day.
Keep safe and enjoy the weather and water.
It makes my £100 paddle seem positively frugal. I have about 80 miles to get it home at the weekend... £1.40 a litre, 4.5 litres to the gallon... so about £300 quid in fuel ...if we can complete the details for the transaction. Yes your boat really has its appeal

Sounds ideal. Although I guess you eat a lot of expensive protein for those muscles Lucky they have some wine to help me get over it.

My weekend didn’t go so well. After a phone call to the broker at 4:30 on Friday to see where we were on sea trial etc, the broker gave me the “call you back in 5”, I didn’t hear of course, and he and seller both seem to have disappeared over the weekend. Guess the owner wanted a shot at it one last time in the good weather.
So I have a “Do you want to sell this *@#!ing boat or what” phone call to make tomorrow. Really don’t want it miles away hanging around in its current marina after I have bought it waiting for a weather window to get it back home. Looks like next weekend is also going to be a reasonable sea state so one last push before I go and buy something else.
Christ knows how though. I am 0 for 2 on brokers at the moment. I asked the last one if I could inspect the history documents and never got to, or heard from him again! That boat is still for sale. I asked this latest one a bunch of questions on its advertised “ready to go” status in order that I can finalise what I think it is worth last Wednesday which still remain unanswered.
If it isn’t the brokers fault, and the owner just wants another weekend on it, then why can’t he just be bloody honest and tell me. If it is the brokers fault, he really doesn’t deserve his 5-8% on this deal as the money could already be in the sellers bank account.
Enjoy Bordeaux.
Is there anything to suggest some swell coming our way?
And do you know how long it takes for an Atlantic storm to affect our side? I'm trying to work out whether we're likely to see anything interesting next week. (Of course I'll just look on magicseaweed on Friday, but it's nice to get a long term view.)

Charts continue to show settled, and now increasingly warmer (and more thundery) conditions developing. There is no end in sight to this... at present...
^^Won't be long before the farmers are crying its too dry.....then they need some handouts.....then hosepipe bans will start from this week right through to October.....greenpeace will be out and force with their crackpot global warning protests.....kids icecreams will melt 30 seconds after getting them and parents then shout at them for not licking fast enough --- but someone catches this on a video and sticks it on facebook and the whole world gets into a right pickle about bad parenting.....people complain they can't sleep at night as its too hot.....you decide to have a BBQ but you go to the shops and all the early birds have bought the entire contents of the store, like its some sort of Nuclear war about to start.....
....sigh.....
....sigh.....

Driven through a proper heavy downpour and lightning near Southampton. Looks like we're going to miss the worst West side of the new forest though
I work near Winchester and bloody nora did it throw it down. Mental rain. Didn't take a jacket and got soaked sprinting from the office to the car.Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
