There are quite a few versions with "original" quotes having been variously attributed to Mark Twain, EB White, and Barry Crier among others. I'd guess that Barry being the eldest of these three
, he was probably the originator.I don't know when it made the leap from frogs to kittens, maybe that's a PH thing?

Also said as, explaining a joke is like dissecting a kitten, it just ruins it. I've known that saying since I was a wee lad and that was quite a while ago. Likely predates me as well.
