Not sure if it was someone off here who was selling the ph zippo on eBay, but I withdrew my high bid as a zero rated user bid then immediately withdrew their bid three times on the trot - looked like someone was trying to drive up the price if you ask me.

It went for a few quid in the end to 'the lucky bidder'.

Item 261075624788 if you want to check it out.

Picked up another 'ice black' on amazon, quite cheap!
Looks like it's back up for sale.

No doubt they have already got a mate to bid on it to inflate the price like they did with the last one.

Do you smoke? What got you into collecting them?

A friend gave me me this zippo 20 years ish ago, it's a pipe smokers zippo so you can use it for normal cigarettes or turn it on its side to light a pipe.
It's got some dents and scratches but still on good working order.

"Lucky" Zippo update - now with added !

So, earlier in the thread, we talked about how an over-zealous Sabine had taken my zippo from me at security in Munich. I posted it to my gf's parents house in Germany and it arrived safely, and she was intending to pick it up next time she was over on business. Which was last week.

Now, not to be caught out twice, she safely bunged it into her hold suitcase (which I've done Illinois of times with no problem) only to be called back to baggage at Nurnberg, and told that she couldn't carry it in the hold either. Wtf? So now it's back at her parents house again.

Is it now impossible to travel with a zippo in any way whatsoever?? Will it need posting to get to the UK??

fking Germans. Honestly, they get right on my tits sometimes with their rules. Love you darling; you're the exception of course.

I presume if you removed the flint and the wadding etc. then it would be ok. Posting it probably easier though.

They were having it under no circs in hand luggage and yes, with wadding etc removed and binned for the hold.

I'm still utterly confused as to how a small plastic cylinder of compressed, flammable gas is 'ok', but a bloody petrol lighter is a security risk. Mental.

Is this standard practice or is Germany just mental? As far as I can make out, the US seems ok with them?

Some cool Zippos in this thread. Have owned and lost a bunch of them over the years but this one is my favourite - it's never been out of it's presentation case and never will - it's just a souvenir from a superb night out hehe

Admittedly domestic, but I take a boggo standard brass zippo through UK airports weekly, in my pocket.

Never had the slightest issue.

In the last month that has included LGW, Edinburgh, Manchester and Southampton airports, and pretty much every other part of their security varies, but the lighter as always been fine.

I always thought it was poor form to light a pipe with a Zippo, I'm sure I've heard that matches are the only proper way to light a pipe.

I've heard that about cigars, not pipes.

Yeah I've heard that too, I'm fairly sure I've heard it about pipes specifically, it must taste foul. Anyway if I remember I shall upload a pic of my Zippos later!

Many moons ago, when I was working as a barman (and you could still smoke in pubs) a customer recoiled in horror when I offered to light his cigar with my Zippo.

"Ruins the taste", apparently.

Right, my mate has looked in to this further. It seems that Zippo's are cleared by the international air transport authority for transport on board aircraft even when fuelled. Just to get the whole picture on this he is going to speak to the airport's security team to get their stance on zippos's then report back to this thread when he has more information smile

He really wants to know why they took it off you.

That is actually legendary behaviour! I'm massively cheered by the fact that there are other people as obsessive about knowing 'why?' as I am in the world! smile

Just for clarity, München said 'nein' to allowing it in hand luggage and Nürnberg said 'nein' to allowing it in hold baggage without removing the wadding etc.

Hugely grateful to you and your chum as I'd love to know the exact rules on this as I hate how there seems to be no consistency here. If its a straight 'no' all along the line then fair enough; I'd leave it at home but it's a pest that some airports seem to randomly take umbrage to them.

I await his findings with interest and please send him an Internet beer from me.

Not a problem! It seems that the overall authority has no problem with them but maybe individual airports/countries are using their discretion against Zippo lighters. The why part is the real kicker as the bloke who is doing the investigation bit has carried fuelled zippo's all over the world on airlines with no problems. May just be the Germans being over sensitive?

Either way, we shall find out soon thumbup
