As an aside the Cambridge dictionary is no longer/never was used in many academic quarters.
But given that England doesn't have an official authority on the English language (unlike, say, France and its Académie française), all of our dictionaries simply reflect usage.
Certainly the Cambridge seems to. But a dictionary should actually inform us of the roots and meaning of a word, not tell us what slang has been adopted into our language that we didn't know about. Aaaanyway.. how about this (the phrase "An Iconic Facility" appeared on the building before it had even had it's last coat of graffiti proof paint. And yes, rather unsurprisingly the building is an underused sh*thole):

That^ is utter st bks.

The increasing use of "very unique" is my current pet hate. Something is either unique or not, there are no variations of uniqueness.
Totally agree. yes

Or "quite unique". How can something be less than unique and yet still qualify as unique?
I agree on "degrees of unique-ness", but for the "quite unique" usage, I suspect it's a different meaning of the word "quite". I don't see it as the same meaning as, say, "quite good" which I would take to mean "fairly good, but not really good". I see it as a filler word, really, as in "quite delightful".

I'm not suggesting that loads of people don't use "quite unique" to represent a degree of unique-ness, only that I think there's a way of using that coupling without transgressing the meaning of unique.

Didn't someone point to a definition of "unique" the last time this rant popped up that suggests it is now acceptable to use it as a synonym for "very rare" rather than what I took to be its original (or "proper") meaning? I'm sure it's probably changed now, but it'll just be because it's easier than correcting everyone.

Words change.
Some do, some don't. Gay still means carefree to many. Mostly the words that change are those that have some subjective/personal interpretation involved. Let me know when 'door' changes to 'oven' will you?

Inconvenient changes to plans!

I've just been told I have something on for work in a few weeks that's about 3 hours away and I ideally need to be there on a Sunday night. But I'm away that weekend and won't get home until gone 9 so will need to either to go home to repack and arrive crazy late on Sunday, or persuade them to book me a direct flight as my easyjet one isn't refundable to change.

Annoyed beyond reason because giving me 6 weeks notice is plenty really. biggrin

There is only one 4:30 in the day and it's not the one you're thinking of!

An added complication is that the closest I'll get to my car through all this is about an hour away biggrin

Tell them you'll set off at 9am on Monday when your holiday ends.

You may end up saying what everyone else was thinking
