The RJ comments would have gone away long ago if some had just let it go. Like they would when any other standup gets a mention on here.
I don’t think so.

Anyone can regard a comedian as unfunny whilst acknowledging that they are a comedian but they’re delivering a style of humour that they happen to not find funny, but realising that others do.

However RJ is considered by many on here including myself as not even a comedian as instead of simply being unfunny, she completely ruins a program that they might otherwise enjoy.

I can't stand Sarah Millican, for entirely the same reasons folk are not warming to RJ. Breaks the flow, unfunny and therefore spoils the entertainment. As soon as I see Millicans joke shop hog face, I reach for the remote control.

I listened to a new comedy sketch show on 4Extra last night. It's called 'POV' and comprises comics who make 'brilliant' videos' for social media writing brand new audio-only sketches.

I didn't find any of them funny. What do you think? https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001vc51

What’s the “our community” that she’s referring to there?
Does she mean actual community in its original sense?
she's a lesbian

Problem is, some seem to think that you can't critique her without it being connected to her condition and seize on every chance they can to act all white knight. She gets so many comments because she is one of the most unfunny 'comedians' out there, added to the fact that she's all over TV these days for reasons that appear to have more to do with being PC and inclusive than booking someone who'll make a show more entertaining.

I don't know if she's funny or not, I can't understand what she says

Agreed. She's married to Gary Delany who in contrast I think is hilarious as a one liner comedian.

For me she is also a channel changer. Her documentary was good, her Call the Midwife, (the small bit I saw)(dont watch call the midwife nothing to do with RJ) was fine and in context. I have a feeling writing material would also be a good career, Comedy is part material and part timing/delivery. I find her material generally ok, some good, some bad like most,, but its delivered in a way that is not as funny as it could otherwise be. That is entirely due to her disability not 'her' per se. There is no doubt a place for her, just not stand up.

To a certain extent I find that quite troubling that I am criticising someones diasbility and it doesn't sit well with me, but I suppose its like saying an olympic final with a one legged 100m runner (hopper). Great if its in context with other 1 legged 100m runners, otherwise its a bit pointless and possibly condescending I believe, "awe bless look at him hop, isnt he good, lets give him a clap even though hes's finished a minute after everyone else'.

How about Jack Carroll, 2nd on BGT, has CP, can't walk, still a funny stand up, and currently on Corrie, quite a good actor too?

He was on Would I lie to you this week wasn't he
Never heard of him before, you wouldn't know he has cerebral palsy by the way he speaks, that's the difference between him and Rosie.

Setting aside there's different ways CP affects the individuals, saw him, he just fitted in, banter back and forth, no rude interruptions. Just another participant.

Going off topic, interesting comment by Richard Osman on WILTY and Lee Mack. Totally unscripted show, in the banter there is sometimes a slight delay before the response comes back. To tighten up the edit sometimes they will take a second out so there isn't a long silence. With Lee his quick responses are so rapid fire that they sometimes have to add time back in to make it seem more naturally back and forth.

I'm off to see Jim Davidson live over the weekend. I expect he won't be funny, but I'm interested in seeing him anyway. Not sure if his act is comedy or ranting about the state of the nation as per his YouTube channel.
Well he turned out to be quite funny and enjoyable to listen to. It was a mixture of his old style comedy and a hint of ranting at the state of the UK, but also with some funny life stories thrown in about his life as a comedian, such as the pranks he saw Freddie Star pull backstage etc.

But why is it at live shows there is often a drunken bloke in the audience who heckles in an unintelligible manner and spoils the act? It happened tonight just as Jim was telling us a story about Jethro, which got spoilt.

It says something.....about the state of the UK!

Jones is, but Rowling isn’t. On that basis her comment doesn’t make sense.

If I had to guess it’s because there were lesbians at the terf brunch.

Just a guess though.

Isn't that the B-side to 'Murder On The Dancefloor'?

Back to R.J... I've been biting my tongue, unsure whether to post my thoughts but I think others have touched on the point I want to make so here goes.

I realise TV is edited but a lot of panel show comedy relies on a smart, funny and quick reposte; Lee Mack is a great example as mentioned above. I've yet to see a show where somebody asks the other panelists to amuse themselves for a few minutes while they work on a funny reply.

The issue with Jones is that her disability precludes her from the 'quick'. Her thought process may be on the button but her delivery is not conducive to a show where fast wits and 'banter' are mainstay. She's as well-suited to a panel show as she is to the Krypton Factor. Much like the terrible wannabe pop-people on talent shows with the supportive family urging them on in the wings, wanting to be something doesn't mean you can be something if there are insurmountable obstacles in your way (not being able to sing/dance/speak).

I would hate to be invited to participate in an event if for one second I thought I was there to tick a box, yet to a lot of people here that is exactly how R.J. comes across on TV; she's there to fill a diversity quotient as oppose to her comedic talent, which a lot of us here are struggling to understand - both figuratively and literally.

More power to those with a disability who are successfully achieving what they set out to do. In this age of equality are we not allowed to say if something is a bit rubbish if the person is disabled or can criticism only be levelled at the able-minded/bodied?

I appreciate my links below are not from exactly highbrow sources but RJ has got lots of praise for her appearance in Call the Midwife. As I've said, I think she is probably a very capable and determined person that might be best placed proving that by doing things other than comedy performance.
